Sure, if those happen to be regular trips. If it's a once in a blue moon trip, you can rent a gasser rather than spending $60-80K for a bit more range.400 miles enables travel to/from places that have sparse to zero destination charging. I’ve been to places where you’re either charging by the grace of an RV park or you have to double back to hit a DCFC station 70+ miles away.
400 miles of range means visiting Stanley, Idaho to go camping or MTB outside of Joseph, OR is not a problem.

Or, frankly, for any lengthy road trip when you don’t want to spend a lot of time DC “Fast” Charging. And that’s what I have to do a couple times a year. But this just isn’t something most Americans want to hassle with.Sure, if those happen to be regular trips. The contiguous United States has 2.96 million sq miles of land. China has 3.6 million sq miles of land. China also has 31,000 miles of high-speed rail and 2.2 million public DCFC stations with somewhere north of 4.7 million individual public DCFC stalls. The United States has 15,100 DCFC stations and roughly 72,500 individual stalls. Being big isn't an excuse. This is not all that dissimilar from the “why can’t America have a better rail system” lament. Answer: it’s a big damned country.
If it was winter, and the temperatures were below freezing, I would agree. But air-conditioning usage is a quarter or less of the draw that the heater sees. That includes any cooling capacity being used to keep the battery happy. I can't see a drop of more than 15% in those conditions unless other external factors are taken into account, like elevation changes, or headwinds. There are plenty of reasons for wanting longer range. Chargers are scarce to non-existent in a lot of areas. Having the range of the BMW would mean I wouldn't have had to charge to 90-100% on some of my stops. From Betty NV to Lone Pine CA is only 114 miles... But 114 miles through Death Valley when it's well over 100 degrees really eats up your battery.
Good luck I canceled my order which I had the only secured order for the IX here. And a few of my friends are saying they ordered theirs and they’re not gonna even get it until next spring almost. For me, they were not able to tell me an estimate at all, so I just went ahead and was able to get an i4, that adjustment built and shipped to Texas, but whoever ordered it backed out so we had it sent to Mississippi and I got a good deal on that and I’m really loving it. I love the ride. I did want the three, but I couldn’t wait that long. And I got a good deal from Nissan today. I still had 19 months left on my lease, but they figured out how much it was going to cost to get out of the lease 19 months early, and because it had so low of mileage and it was in such new condition. The dealership ended up giving me enough for the vehicle that I only am gonna owe Nissan five payments versus 19 payments and I didn’t have a penalty so that worked out.So my lease on my 2023 Mace GT PE ends in late September of this year. As I’ve posted before, I really enjoy driving this car, it really is a lot of fun. But I desire longer range and faster charging. So after much consideration, I went ahead and ordered a BMW iX3. I went with the 20 inch wheels with summer tires, which gives the longest range of 434 miles. I’m assuming that in real life I will not achieve this, but should end up with a lot more range than I currently get with my Mach E. I was hoping that Ford one more car to change the range but so far it’s more or less the same. I got an email from BMW that my order has been accepted. If I’m lucky the new car will be ready just about the time My lease ends. Thanks to all of you. Who have made these boards a great experience. I’ve gotten a lot of good advice from all of you.
Well, just like the guy goes to the doctor hey Doc every time I do this, it hurts! Then the doctor says well don’t do that! Lol don’t look at the teethI want to like the bmw but every time I look at it I see those beaver teeth
I have a 2022 Premium. EPA rates the range at 303 miles. In reality I typically see 270 miles. That's a 10% drop from EPA. I see the same 10% drop in MPG with my ICE vehicles. Winter might push that range drop to 25%. And yes, that's at highway speeds of 70+ on a regular basis.I don't want to turn this into a range debate. I'm only going by my real world experiences. I have a 2024 premium with the long range battery. 300 miles of range is only under optimal conditions: warm weather, but not too hot; no highway driving; lots of stop and go; top speed of maybe 35-40 mph. In the real world, you're talking more like 200-230 range.
Hmmm… well I dunno there must some excuse. Just ask Gavin Newsom? I wonder how we might be different from China???The contiguous United States has 2.96 million sq miles of land. The "excuse" is America has plowed trillions of dollars into feeding the military-industrial complex over the last 80 years. We as a country made our decisions and now we get to live with them.Hmmm… well I dunno there must some excuse. Just ask Gavin Newsom? I wonder how we might be different from China???
Jeff - Thank you for this. I’m hoping you are correct and that the iX3 and Volvo EX60 represent major upgrades, not just for me, but for those who have been waiting for better cars to tempt them into acquiring an EV. I do worry about the potential bugs that come with any new system. But, hey, forums like this and BIMMERPOST are the perfect bug sprays. The "excuse" is America has plowed trillions of dollars into feeding the military-industrial complex over the last 80 years. BTW OP, congrats on the iX3. I think it represents the first of the next generation of EVs. The Mach E is nice but you are upgrading bigly.
I was at the Nissan dealer turning in my 24 rogue and they had a couple of new ones in the showroom. I just wanted to show you guys here it’s the latest for the rogue. The white one looks like a Mitsubishi outlander. It’s their new plug-in hybrid, three row rogue at first he said take a look at the new Electric one and I thought all Electric and he said no it’s a plug-in hybrid. I thought it was the green one the bluish green that’s the new Murano but it’s gas powered now if they made an electric that looked like the Murano that wouldn’t be a bad looking Nissan.Jeff - Thank you for this. Not as much as you might think. Here are two differences, though, that can be discussed with no danger of thread lock. Cause we know that will happen.Hmmm… well I dunno there must some excuse. Just ask Gavin Newsom? I wonder how we might be different from China???
