Rumor is a 60kWh battery pack and 400v platform for the new Ford EV
Just my opinion, but I'm not a fan of this at all, unless the real world efficiency (not quoted) is something like 6-7 miles/kWh. I have no desire for a car with a real world range of 100 miles.

I'm not saying there isn't a use case for this, but it's awfully slim.

Not sure I follow your math. The 2021 Mustang Mach-E had a usable battery capacity of 88KWH and a range between 250 and 300 miles (depending on configuration). I’d hope they’d at least hit 230 with a 60 kWh battery.

They are targeting 300 mile range, so 5mi/kWh which is a very good efficiency number. We will have to wait and see what the final rated and real world numbers are.

6-7mi/kWh is completely unrealistic and impossible with current technology even for absolutely perfect ideal condition rated numbers, much less real world numbers.

I don't want to turn this into a range debate. I'm only going by my real world experiences. I have a 2024 premium with the long range battery. 300 miles of range is only under optimal conditions: warm weather, but not too hot; no highway driving; lots of stop and go; top speed of maybe 35-40 mph. In the real world, you're talking more like 200-230 range.

5 mi/kWh would be crazy. I would probably guess the 300 mile range would be more likely to be 200-230 real world, which i guess isn't horrible in certain circumstances.

It deals with keeping cost at or near $30k.

If that is the case, I will definitely be passing on it...... I'm looking for more Range and faster charging speeds. I don't want to go backwards...

There are inly three things you can probably say about the upcoming Ford EV built in the UEV platform:

1. It’s a midsize pickup.
2. It will have LFP batteries due to cost considerations.
3. The base model will be in the $30,000 range.

Everything else, including battery size and range is speculation.

At this point, they might be better off re-badging a Chinese car until they can get their own house in order.

It’s simple proportions. Let’s take your worst-case numbers. 60 / 88 x 200 = 136.364

I have a 21 AWD with the long range battery. In the summer, I get roughly 3.1 kw/mile so, I could expect about 279 miles off a full charge, which is about what I get. Obviously, in the winter, I get significantly less.

Anyone remember the $39K cybertruck? Or the $39K lightning? I’m not sure that $30K number is real or realistic.

I'm probably safe is saying that coming truck will offer an extended range battery pack. By the way, I seldom get less than 250 miles with my '23 extended range AWD.

Glad to hear you have a 400 mile bladder. Why else would you need more range than a Mach E provides?
400 miles enables travel to/from places that have sparse to zero destination charging. I’ve been to places where you’re either charging by the grace of an RV park or you have to double back to hit a DCFC station 70+ miles away.

400 miles of range means visiting Stanley, Idaho to go camping or MTB outside of Joseph, OR is not a problem.

More range and faster charging are always welcome improvements. The closer EV range and charging gets to refueling a gas vehicle the less excuses people have to be against EVs.

While current charging and range of the Mach-E are acceptable, it’s not great. Sometimes you just want a 5 minute pee break and be on your way again instead of needing to wait 30-40 minutes for a charge. Or imagine if that 5 minute pee break can already get you back to 80%.

Plus for people that don’t have home charging, more range means having to charge less often.

You can always opt for the smaller battery if you don’t need the range.
