Hi everyone,

About a month ago I purchased a used 2021 Mach-E Premium in Infinite Blue Metallic and absolutely love it but I’m confused about software updates. My car says it’s SYNC is UTD but I’m operating on 4.0.22228 and it seems like there have been quite a few updates past that. I called Ford to ask and they said that’s the current version but I know there was the 4.1.2 interface update over a year ago.

Is it just because mines a 2021 it doesn’t continue on with updates or hasn’t been selected for the update yet?

I’m fine if it doesn’t qualify for future updates but I would enjoy having easier access to the cameras when parking. Thanks for any advice/tips!

UPDATE: okay so i'm now even more confused. I called my local Ford dealership to see if they could help (made sure to tell them I was operating on the 4.02228) and they said that since my car is out of the bumper to bumper warranty that I have to pay for any future updates (quoted me $215 per update) and it would take a minimum of a full day.

They checked my VIN and said that my car *is up to date* and there are *no additional updates* available for my car.

I did ask if the information about paying for each update was still applicable/correct for updates going forward and they said yes but they would typically run diagnostics beforehand and then do the update.

SECOND UPDATE: After going to the dealership, they didn't do anything. She said they'd check but all the information would be listed in my ford pass app. They seemed like a nice dealership and I had no issues with getting my tire replaced (I ran over a staple in the shoulder of my tire ugh) but I do wish they could've provided more clarity to updates.

I feel like i'm going insane at this point so I am going to try to have my VIN looked up and start researching the option of doing updates by myself. I ran a reset on my car and changed the update schedule to see if that will help with anything over the next week.

Your car, and all other 2021s are still supported and entitled to updates. You are 2 major software update branches behind, currently we are up to 6.x, with the UI refresh coming in as part of 6.14.

I suspect that you should see a bunch of OTA updates come through over the next couple of weeks. Sometimes it takes a while for Ford’s servers to register that the vehicle is now associated to a customer account and begin deploying updates.

Whoever you talked to at Ford is technically incorrect, you are definitely out of date. Maybe they just meant that you don’t have any OTAs scheduled. You could take the car to your dealership and try to convince them to do all the module updates, but I know that a lot of dealerships are hesitant to do that because they don’t get paid for it unless they claim it against a warranty item or recall.

You could also do the updates yourself via FDRS + an OBD adapter, if you are so inclined.

Welcome to the forum. There are many causes to delays in OTA updates. Some recent history of your car would be helpful. Has it been in service and connected to cellular service prior to your purchase?

I recommend checking the following settings:

1. Is auto-updating enabled in your sync car settings? If not, enable auto-updating and set a schedule that works for you. The car must have a good AT&T cell signal. Don’t count on wifi for updates.

2. Check your update status on Ford Pass (Settings/Software Updates/Update Details), or on your Sync screen under software updates.

Check these settings and reply back and we can give you some additional trouble-shooting suggestions

Ahh, makes sense. I didn't realize it was 2 updates behind! I'm fine giving it some time, I just don't want to fall too far behind that it continues to delay getting updates in the future. I'll reach out to my local dealership and see if they're willing to do the updates for me. If not i'll start researching the FDRS + OBD adapter option for doing it myself. thank you for the information!

No problem! Just to clarify - you are more like 10+ updates behind. Each major branch (4.x, 5.x, 6.x) has a bunch of updates included within it. For example, 6.1, 6.4, 6.5, 6.8, etc.

There are also other updates that do not follow the regular numbering system and may be labelled as ECG-x.x.x.x, IPMA-x.x.x.x, etc, as well as some labelled “priority update”. These are typically targeted fixes for specific issues.

Here is a list of updates you can reference:

Thanks! I read a lot of information on here when I was researching getting a Mach-E, very cool community.
Yes, it is connected to my cellular service and connected through my Ford account. I also ensured that I have the "vehicle connectivity" toggle on.

1. Yes, Auto-updating is on and I have multiple days/times selected for the updates. I have AT&T and get a strong clear connection. I have also allowed it to connect to my hotspot to see if that would impact anything.

2. When I check there it does show that the car is up to date even after a refresh check for updates.

I believe 6.8 is an update for your IPC (small cluster screen behind wheel). Prep for BC 1.3.

Your dealer service techs don’t have access to FDRS. They only see updates for recalls and CSPs. They are correct that you would pay for out of warranty software updates, unless part of a recall/CSP. I recommend you post your VIN on this thread:

https://www.macheforum.com/site/thr...nt-and-are-willing-to-look-up-info-for-others

It is reviewed by a great group of individuals that have access to FDRS and can read your car software status. They can see which of 40+ modules are out-of-date. If you are uncomfortable sharing your VIN publicly, you can DM them.

They can give you some great advice on next steps.

Did the previous owner purchase an extended warranty for your car. If they did and the module is part of the warranted part, updating would be covered by the warranty. My dealer confirmed this with Ford and a recent update was covered.

Good Luck.

I disagree.
I believe ANY service tech that works at a Ford dealership is well aware of what IDS, PTS, Oasis, FDRS are.
And they very likely have techs that have used FDRS, therefore would absolutely know that it lists all the updates that any single VIN qualifies for.

Their decision to tell customers that their vehicles are "up to date", when they darn well know that there are multiple updates available for the vehicle, is no more than their belief that the customer wouldn't know any better.

It also proves how naive and uninformed they are about the forums like this one that exists for almost every model of vehicle Ford currently produces. They don't know and they have no respect whatsoever for an informed customer.

Therefore they will be dishonest to your face.

If they were to suddenly discover just how much is known and understood about their domain, it would be a real eye opening moment. But probably would just make them angry.

It's probably happened to more than a few. Customers have presented FDRS screenshots to techs when they are willing to confront the smoke screening.
