Would you be ok waiting for a 30 min or longer, needing a charge but car just sitting there? If you don't want someone to unplug your car, YOU unplug it when full.
Where are people getting the idea that the other car was full?

It wasn’t. OP unplugged them mid-charge, charged his own car, then plugged the other car back in.

If the other car was sitting fully charged, people would feel differently.

If you’re showing up to a free single stall L3 charger on a holiday weekend…… yeah, I would expect there to be a line and have to wait.

Scratch that, I wouldn’t even bother trying to get in line because I KNOW there would be a line.

L2 at 100%? Maaaaybe I'd unplug, but I'd need to be pretty desperate. DCFC still charging? Absolutely not. Even someone well past 80% on a DCFC - I've charged to mid-90s to avoid one last late night top-up before getting home.

After 5 min on a fast charger, yes. Irresponsible to just leave it
Problem is, is that written somewhere someone who isn't in the car would see it? Or do we go off unwritten law like urinal etiquette?
There is a lot of incoming newbies to DCFC. Heck I didn't realize the two cords on 1 station couldn't be used at the same time until my 3rd session and I did a bit of homework first :)

Suggest people that charge in public put your cell # inside the charging door so they can contact you in case of emergency or charging issue.

I would normally agree, but I would submit there are RARE circumstances where that might be necessary. In any event, if you do unplug someone, STAY WITH THE VEHICLE and “borrow” the plug for the absolute minimum necessary to get you to another charger. No more than 5-10 minutes. After that, just hang out in your car until someone returns and a charger frees up.
As a general rule, don’t do it. If you’re in a real emergency, remain with your car and only “borrow” for 5-10 mins.
Oh perhaps. As the saying goes, someone’s lack of planning doesn’t constitute an emergency on my part. There’s no indication in the original post that the car was certainly finished charging to start with anyway.

But let’s be real about it — this isn’t a mortal sin on @L0WBATT3RY’s part. Maybe just a venial sin. I mean it’s not like he was ICE’ing the spot or, even worse, driving an EV Blazer. Your penance, @L0WBATT3RY , is 15 DCFC’s in EV purgatory —aka 50 kW old EFACEC units— before you may charge elsewhere. Go in Peace. ;)

New technology is going to result in new cultural norms. That's my contribution to this thread - I'm advocating that unplugging a non-charging vehicle should (and I think likely will) become culturally acceptable in most (maybe almost all?) situations.

And as for briefly unplugging an unattended vehicle charging at a free L2 charger for a quick emergency charge, I land on that not being a mortal sin, though I think that's more of a gray area.

That's where I'd differ. Your emergency charge, being an hour?, or about 10kW (this has been very rare in my L2 exp, which usually is a 6.6kW Charger). Which might be what that person needed to get home, or to a meeting on time, or any number of reasons they needed that hour just as much as you.

The that fix really is faster charging so less people sitting around I'd think.

The fix is people being kinder to each other.

But since it’s easier to invent new tech than for THAT to happen, yeah, faster charging would help. As would no more free charging and signage with clear rules and idle fees.

Free charging sucks. It is a big reason why public charging sucks. Free chargers are hogged by the rude and inconsiderate. People think because they got there first, they can leave their fully charged cars there all day. A-holes, all of them.

If you can't move your car when it is fully charged, don't park there. And if someone else disconnects your fully charged car, you are the a-hole, not them. If you don't want anyone to "touch" your precious car, move it when it is fully charged. Otherwise, STFU.

As you can tell, this is a hot button for me. I see this behavior regularly and it really pisses me off.

On the other hand, you should NEVER disconnect a car that is actively charging. Wait for it to finish. There is no other choice. There is no way you can justify your selfish behavior if you stop another person from charging just so you can charge. Why do you think you are more important than them? You are not.
