it was originally negotiated for spring. Keep in mind, in addition to the adapter, the cars will all need OTA updates to be able to seamlessly use the tesla network without having to join the tesla network, pay sub fees etc.
I would assume they are doing updates to the network to allow the cars to work. It could take quite a while, based on past performance, to get updates out thru OTA to all Mach e’s. You may be correct though.

The tesla network was to open to Ford in Feb. I assume they are, if you have adapter. The only issue is no adapter. But we will have the adapters soon. Then fighting will begin as non teslas take 2 spots.
There is also a required OTA to enable the SC network. The attached photo is from another post a couple days ago. I assume this person was an early access member.

No OTAs needed to be able to charge at Tesla, I don't understand why people keep stating this. The update will be needed in FordPass to be able to make payment. The V3 and V4 chargers already accept CCS cars, it is just that Tesla has limited the payment acceptance to only the magic dock sites, so far.

The update notes appear to hint at it being related to Plug & Charge usage with the SC network. But as with other charging networks that Ford EVs have access to, there needs to be other ways to pay including using Tesla's app.

Correct. People are assuming that the car needs a software update to charge on the V3 and V4 stations, but it doesn't. The update from Ford is related to using Plug and Charge on Tesla's network. You most likely will be able to use Tesla's app to pay or become a monthly member and pay that way via the app. At the V4 stations you'll be able to pay using the card reader that is on those stations.

clearly this is a semantics issue. Does an OTA update need to take place on cars for the supercharger network? apparently it does. as evidenced in the picture above showing the update.

Again, that specifically calls out the OTA as necessary for PLUG AND CHARGE to work. For a year now there have been Tesla "magic dock" stations deployed that service CCS cars without any software change on the vehicle. To use magic dock it does currently require a Tesla account for billing, so it would logically follow that the adapters will work for manually started sessions without a car update.

Ultimately all of this is supposition - including a late february date for the rollout to begin (that came from an offhand comment by a Tesla employee, not anyone at Ford). Ford has only publicly stated "spring"

but also lets not forget magic dock doesn't require the adapter that ford is issuing for gen 3 tesla charging stations. so it's an entirely different situation.

The magic dock adapter and the sneak pics of the adapter ford had on their site are remarkably similar. One might suggest that the guts of the magic docks and the forthcoming adapter are essentially identical. Tesla certainly follows the philosophy of reusing what they've already done, and it would make sense that the magic dock and adapters perform the same function and thus use the same code and components.

We'll find out soontm

Has anyone told Musk that with charging cables, size does matter?

Maybe. Right now for instance, only the MagicDock stations show up in the Tesla app for non-Teslas. Until a station is made visible to us, I don't think we can use the Tesla app to activate/pay. Maybe they'll just turn on all V3/V4 stations in the app once the first adapters start shipping, but I'm not so sure that's gonna happen right away. Wouldn't surprise me if the deal is to initially have the car manufacturer's processes (like Ford Pass/P&C) handle it, perhaps until all manufactures that made deals get their shot. Where Tesla would then start selling adapters directly to anyone, and opens the Tesla app V3/V3 population to all.

Consider this... If Tesla does turn on all V3/V4s in the Tesla app once the first adapters ship to Ford, could a Kia owner borrow (or buy) an adapter from a Ford owner and charge at SCs via the Tesla app long before it's Kia's place in line? Might be the type of thing they all want to avoid until all manufacturers hold their deployment.

I really have no idea, but I could see that being a distinct possibility.

Pretty sure I read an article that said only non-popular(busy) stations would populate for non-Teslas.

That might have been referring to Magic Docks. There was some talk that Tesla would pick less busy sites for those.

But for the adapters, it's already been announced they will work at over 15,000 chargers. That pretty has to be all the V3s (and the few V4s).

We keep rehashing the same topic. 15,000+ chargers. Ford first, then GM.
