"It was a dark and stormy night..."
Actually, i got my Mustang Mach E on March 31, and it WAS a dark and very rainy night, so none of the usual pics of me smiling next to the car at the dealership or anything. Additionally, ever since I decided to get a Mustang Mach E, I knew exactly what the first pictures of the car were going to be, and I just hoped that nobody was going to beat me to the punch. To the best of my knowledge, nobody has
Lee Iacocca went to Lehigh University, which is where I went ('82, '90G). In 1986, Lehigh received the Bethlehem Steel Research Labs as part of a major campus expansion, and renamed one of the buildings up there. I knew pictures of the newest, most revolutionary member of the Mustang family had to be taken on Lehigh's campus, and in front of Iacocca Hall, because of Lehigh's historical connection to the early automotive industry, and the connection to Lee Iacocca, the father of the Mustang
I believe I recounted my actual purchase process previously. It was pretty typical of a Pennsylvania car sale. I went with 36 month, 0.9% financing. Good thing because my dealer had only sold 2 Mustang Mach Es and the Business Manager hadn't heard of Ford Options (most of their sales are either cash, leases through businesses, or finances). As I said, by the time I got out of their, it was dark and pouring, so I just wanted to get home. It's a VERY tight squeeze into my garage (I have a small garage). I didn't bother charging it the first night. I did charge the second night. That's when I discovered I have to use the charge coupler release button in the middle of the charge status light ring to get the FCCS charge coupler to release. I've read of someone else having to do that as well.
Today was my first "long drive". Bethlehem and back was about 110 miles. So, my observations:
Update: One other thing I should have added: I'd like to see voice control over more car systems. For example, I'd like voice control over steering wheel heater and seat heaters.

Today was my first "long drive". Bethlehem and back was about 110 miles. So, my observations:
- Fit and finish on the car are, as far as I can tell, flawless. No misalignments, goofy gaps, or anything. The roof is smooth across the top. from one side to the other. It doesn't but up directly against the top of the windshield, but there's a small, even gap, that has some kind of seal/bumper between the two. Doors close solidly and don't rub against anything, etc. In other words, Ford knows how to put cars together correctly (unlike some other companies). The paint is flawless (to my eyes). There was a tiny bit of adhesive left on the driver's door from where there must have been some protective film, but I was able to get that off myself.
- Cabin interior is exactly what I expected, and again, fit and finish is flawless. No issues or complaints, and exactly what I remember from the show car I saw. I love it.
- Screen "buzz". Ok, I really had to look for this, but I finally found it. Turned the car on, turned off climate control, sound system, and made sure I was sitting in a dead silent area. leaned in closely to the Instrument panel, and yes, there is a faint buzz/high pitched whine. To my hearing, once you either have the climate control system on, the audio system on, have any external background sounds, or are in motion, the faint buzz/high pitched whine is totally drowned out. Perhaps I am lucky and have a vehicle that doesn't have a very noisy IP. In any case, to me, it's not an issue.
- SiriusXM 360L. Ok, either I don't understand this product, or I'm really underwhelmed by it. It was my understanding that it was going to include all of the additional "streaming only" channels that are available in the app. Channels like 1st Wave Deep Cuts. Nope. Instead, it just appears to have some additional "on demand" things that are just "programs", not music.
- Phone As A Key. Doesn't seem reliable enough for me to leave home without a fob yet. When I go into the garage with just my phone, the car just sits there most of the time and doesn't react. Sometimes, it will react with lighting and ponies.
- Intelligent Cruise Control. Wow, this is cool! On the other hand, it's pretty annoying when it reads the speed limit signs in the construction zone as 55 and slams on the brakes, when everyone else is still blowing along at 75 because it's the weekend! I'm pretty impressed at how long it will let you slide by without having your hands on the wheel before it yells at you!
- Collision warning - Neat the way this works with an alert in the IP. On my other cars, it projected red LEDs onto the windshield. I always set these safety features to the most sensitive setting - my preference is that I'd prefer the car to yell at me when there isn't anything there, than to sit quietly and watch me plow into a dump truck or something.
- Acceleration - That's fun!
- Handling - I took it on a twisty and was having all kinds of fun until some soccer mom in her stupid suburban had to get on the road in front of me and spoil everything
Seriously though, I was impressed. I did find out what everyone meant by the car feeling "heavy". I used to have a Miata a long time ago and, on this road, there are a couple of points where if you go fast enough, you can feel the car "get light" (I won't say "catch air"
). Hitting those same points at speed in the Mustang Mach E is sort of like being on a steel track roller coaster. It is NOT about to leave the ground.
- Audio (Non-SiriusXM 360L) - I haven't plugged my iPhone into the USB port yet, so I can only judge streaming Bluetooth, but it's pretty decent, given the source it has to work with. It's a shame they don't have AirPlay so that I could stream over WiFi to the car, but a USB cable will work well enough (better than Bluetooth). I believe CarPlay streams over WiFi, but I'm not sure.
- Exterior lighting - Very good, but when I was driving home in the rain, I did miss fog lights. That's a minor thing.
- Seating comfort - very good. I was able to find a comfortable seating position. As stated by others, cushion tilt would be nice, but they've found a great compromise without it.
- Climate control - I was reminded of something I read somewhere that when one of the recent Mercedes S-classes was designed, the people who designed the climate control system had to design it so that air circulation couldn't be felt because the guy who ran MB disliked drafts. The Mustang Mach E air handling seems to be very effective at circulating cabin air without blowing lots of draft around. I'll be interested to see what I think in the summer time, when I actually like a cold breeze blowing at me when I first get into a car, but for now, I was really impressed. Oh, and the cabin always felt a comfortable 72 degrees. At first I didn't get the idea of 3 different "Autos" - I thought it was dumb, but after a bit, I think it's a great idea!
- Propulsion sounds - pretty cool. I like the way they're just subtle enough, but noticeable. I do hope that Ford gives us a library of more sounds over time (but save the childish ones for Tesla).
Update: One other thing I should have added: I'd like to see voice control over more car systems. For example, I'd like voice control over steering wheel heater and seat heaters.
