When my RC batteries loose capacity or puff up, the process to fully discharge them is to soak the battery in salt water. The current draw is extremely low and does not ignite the battery. With cylindrical batteries it is more likely corrosion damages the metal case the battery cells are in. RC batteries use pouches.

And, for the record, based on actual incidents, ICEVs are 19 times more like to catch fire than a BEV because, you know, oil and gasoline. It just doesn't make the news every time it happens ?. FUD is alive and well (not referring to the OP mind you).
For the record, they aren’t.

I don’t blame you, I blame a fabricated article that made headlines and then gets repeated here whenever this topic comes up.

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a40163966/cars-catching-fire-new-york-times-real-statistics/

The reason that electric cars make the news isn’t that they catch fire.

It’s HOW they catch fire and how hard they are to put out.

A gas car doesn’t spontaneously combust when it gets into saltwater for example.

Spontaneous combustion is scary……. And newsworthy. (Although in this case I wouldn’t consider Instagram the news.)

I am a big enough man to admit when I am wrong (deleted post so as not to contribute the very FUD I abhor ? ). I did not get that factoid from an article but from a YouTube channel. It was a comment made by someone on a panel of of specialists. However, 19 times more likely is not the same as 19 times as many. Probability versus actual accounts. Not that I'm sure 19 times more likely is true either though. Good talk.

No worries, they probably got that stat from the same source.

It’s only until someone looks at the math and thinks…… hey, if 10 cars in my town were catching fire every DAY, wouldn’t I have at least heard about it?!?

The point about us not hearing about ICE fires vs hearing of every BEV fire is absolutely true, regardless of the actual stats.

I wonder if they’ll figure out some sort of built in fire suppression system, because the runaway fires are a legit problem.

“Accidentally” full self drove itself into water, this car was on a suicide mission
Pretty sure this video was in Florida, because the guy taking the video was more critical of owning a Jet Ski than an electric car (us boaters freakin hate Jet Skis!).

A good acronym is calling them SPORE’s.

I think they are focusing on a change in the battery chemistry. I cannot recall which, but there is a type of battery that virtually never catches fire. Sodium Ion maybe? Proper thermal management helps a lot as well. LiON has never liked salt water. I remember reading about being careful in regards to salt water with the removable batteries in phones (when that was a thing).

I know. I’m actually making a bit of a subtle joke. Elon bought the lotus Elise that was used as a “submarine” in a James Bond movie and has occasionally claimed his vehicles were sealed against silly hazards (I think their climate control system is supposed to have an NBC mode or something).
In the movie "The Spy Who Loved Me," I believed the submarine Lotus was an Esprit Turbo.

ah yes! a fellow RC'er...

Never seen one burn from putting it in water, salt or otherwise. But put a nail through one  terrifying.
