Transmission failure issue

Wondering whether anyone else has experienced/heard of this: my 4 month old 2023 MachE had just been charging for an hour at a ChargePoint charger. I smelled a faint burning smell when I disconnected, but was in a parking garage so wasn't sure it was my car or charger. Began to drive at low speed and heard a faint whine. When accelerated onto the highway, all hell broke loose. Very loud grinding noises and multiple warning lights flashing on the dashboard as the car shut off AWD and other functions, but fortunately was still able to steer off the huge highway interchange. After towing back to dealership, I was told that the wiring in the transmission failed; they had seen it before (?), and it had nothing to do with charging. 6 weeks later the new transmission parts came in and should be getting car back soon.

Technically, it’s a transaxle with one gear. ?‍?

I expect many know what giordacl and his dealer mean when they refer to transmission.

The fact is something which does need to “transmit” drive from a rotating energy source does in the strictest mechanical engineering sense mean that every car by definition must have a transmission whether that rotating force is from an electric motor or an internal combustion engine (ICE).

I think that, commonly speaking, it is because people tend to think of the transmission only as the part which actually changes between gear/s when there’s much more to a transmission, such as driveshafts etc hence things can get a little cloudy.

I happen to have a transmission whine which may be motor bearings or drives shafts or something though my car’s covered 59,000 miles.

It does...it's a reduction planetary gearset on the rear..not sure about the front but still a reducer gear "transmission"

Well now that we’ve clarified the car MME indeed does have a transmission, to answer @giordacl’s question, I don’t recall reading anything on the forum about this specific issue before. Hopefully the issue is fixed and you’ll have your car back shortly!

Connecting two wheels on either end of a crankshaft wouldn't be a transmission. That's basically what an electric motor is. I think its pedantic and not correct to say that all cars must definitionally have transmissions.

But the MachE DOES have a transmission let's be clear. It also says so on the window sticker.

I took his bootcamp last Nov. 22'. Professor Kelly is a great teacher and I would take other classes from him when they become available. He was talking about a troubleshooting bootcamp when I was there. Hoping he gets it up and running, great guy!

Same thing happened to me last week. I recharged my car in a charger and after 15km it smelled a bit like burning and suddenly AWD not available Esc error and many other errors.

They are going to change the front motor and the wiring.

Interesting, dreKion. That sounds like the same problem with mine. And thank you for the video richsi. I learned a lot watching it. I hope that the mechanic will talk with me about the specifics of the wiring issue, and will pass it on if I learn anything new. I think the God-awful grinding noise that was happening as I was trying to get off the highway was coming from the gears in the front differential which, according to the video, have to be precisely timed.
