Well unless the methodology is completely different between CONUS and the UK...updates do not come over Wi-Fi here due to the potential for man-in-the-middle attacks, only the car's TCU is used, which talks directly to the mothership.
Interesting. I wonder what the wi-fi connection is used for?

Ford still tell people to connect up their cars to Wi-Fi...why is anybody's guess.

...assured me it was all up to date......Stop! You're killin' me ?
TBF on the rare occasion I do delve into update part of system on car out of boredom and manually check for updates returns a message something like no updates are available or system up to date so who know what’s going on or what should be going on but I tend towards believing my dealer who are usually very good ??‍♂

Supermarket shopping trolley syndrome strikes again!!

[Update Details] in [System Updates] now has had the displayed date of last update removed so I can no longer see when last system update occurred!

Smoke & mirrors, possibly??‍♂

Unsure when (or why) this disappeared, only checked it now since 4yr/58,000 service two weeks ago.

Because if you don't then any updates will be done via the cars inbuilt modem which Ford have to pay for a connection to a network. An update via wifi will not cost them anything.

Pretty sure your car's TCU is already calling the mothership on the Vodaphone network everytime you drive it. Ring your service advisor and ask them to check your connected vehicle page for DTCs (error codes), or to check your OTA dashboard page for any OTA status...if they can see that then you car is using the TCU to talk to Ford like they all do here in the US (but over the AT&T network). No subscription is required for this, it's in-built and part of the car's normal function. This is not the same connection that is the one the customer has to sign up for to share a Wi-Fi in the cabin. Same device but a different sim and provisioning. The TCU connection that the car uses, you can't access, and talks directly to Ford's servers.

Thanks for that explanation although I was already aware of all that. My point was, in answer to the question why do Ford want you to connect to wifi was that Ford, I imagine, have to pay for the connection that they talk to the car with so downloading large amounts of data via a data network will cost more than doing it via WiFi.
