OK - well that's quite different!

I'm wondering if they used that as a worst case placeholder as a "U" at the end of the group means that the vehicle has an "Unacceptable standard of security. An insurer may insist on upgraded aftermarket security before they agree cover." which I think is highly unlikely for a flagship model by a major manufacturer.

The Thatcham website is the trusted source of info on UK insurance groups - so I'd also be more inclined to trust that rather than a 3rd party leasing website.

And that quote was for business and not personal so that might have had an effect. I'm in agreement with @Wonky_Donkey and would trust Thatcham. When I was researching EV insurance Tesla was the only one that came up and that was 50E. You can't get any higher and for a model 3 I was quoted over Ā£1000. If the MME was in group 48U then my quote would have been much higher than the Ā£458 I got.

U might mean something like unconfirmed
from AVIVA's website....
https://www.aviva.co.uk/insurance/motor/car-insurance/a-guide-to-car-insurance-groups/

"Each car insurance group also has a standard level of security features that should apply to the models covered by the group. The higher the group, the more security features the car should have.

Where a particular model has a different security rating than is usually required by the group, youā€™ll see a letter following the Group Rating number.

Each letter indicates a different security rating:

  • 'E' means the vehicle exceeds requirements for a car of its type and so its rating has been reduced (eg a Group 6 car could exceed the security standard for its group, so is rated at Group 5E)
  • 'A' means acceptable
  • 'P' is a provisional rating where there hasnā€™t been enough data to rate the car yet
  • 'D' means the model doesnā€™t meet requirements so the group has been raised (eg a Group 7 car doesnā€™t meet the security standards, so is rated Group 8E)
  • 'U means the level of security is a long way behind the standard required. If this happens, you might find it difficult to get the car insured, or an insurer might ask that you add extra security features before theyā€™ll insure you
  • 'G' is an import. Insurance Group Ratings and security ratings donā€™t apply to imported or specialist cars (eg kit cars or conversions)"

So I kinda did a crazy thing just now... I just bought a personal registration plate for my new Mach-E ! ?

I've never had a personalised plate before in my life, in the 10 or so cars I've bought from new over my lifetime I've always just taken the plate that was allocated to me.

This car feels so special I just went and did it.... and now I hope it doesn't turn up before 1st March 2021 as I bought a "21" plate LOL

It has to have numbers in certain positions, and other restrictions, right?

Seems like this makes it really complicated to get something you want. What did you end up getting? (unless it's an international secret in which case, please don't get anyone in trouble here!)

We've had a few different layouts over the years, so you can pick from old plates in varying formats that might mean something to you that are no longer in use.

Our current standard layout is two letters (the region of the UK car was first registered) two numbers (the year identifier) followed by three random letters. New model years are issued twice a year in March & September. A local plate automatically allocated to a new vehicle for me next March would be like "AP21 XYZ" or something very similar.

I opted to have this.... (see pic) which conveys "My 2021 Mustang Mach E" the best way you can within the normal rules ?

The green slice at the beginning of the plate denotes that it's a BEV

You will be gutted if your car arrives in Feb and you have to wait until 1st March to get it on the road. Personally, unfortunately, I think you will be safe ?

Just had a look myself. GM21MME is available but @Ā£400 it's a bit to much. I think I will stick to what I already have. My initials, year, wife's initials with consecutive years for both our cars. I think I have spent enough already in anticipation of getting this car what with the garage extension and all.

Evening all.

Just had a chat with a young lady from the Ford concierge team advising that the dealership will be contacting me next week to start agreeing the finance side of things. Iā€™m looking forward to that call thatā€™s for sure! With a possibility of a ā€œdriveā€ in early January, although this would be a high end demo car!

Watch this space!

Regards.
