Well, Ford, the new "Distance To Empty" algorithm doesn't work . . .

It’s actually quite accurate for me now. The GOM was off by about 35% prior to this update, now it’s just about spot on the money.
You live in a land of very little temperature change. Plus the distances you drive likely are quite limited to folks driving across whole states and much more here in the 48 and great white north, not to mention the UK, etc.

When did this update occur? It must have skipped my car for now.. mine is fairly accurate if not pessimistic. I definitely don’t get a standard starting range, it varies even though I start with 80% every day.

I switched from watching range to empty to battery charge percentage and I have much less range anxiety

Hawaii isn’t all beaches and coast. The average 6 am temperature at our place this month has been 43 F. This week’s lowest 6 am low was 35 F, I had to go break ice in the livestock troughs. The daytime highs are no more than 55. Summer highs are usually just barely above 70. My normal average per month of driving is something around 1,000 miles and always over some rather steep climbs. In other words, it’s pretty much like many locations.

OK. I stand corrected, sorry. :)

Nothing to be sorry about, it’s a common misconception. I live on Hawaii island which is bigger than several states all by itself. Plus I live about 1/3 of the way up a dormant volcano (Maunakea, formerly Mauna Kea), it’s different .

I loved visiting the big Island. Love the fact that you can go from tropical beach, to tropical rain forest, to alpine forest, to high desert, to snowy mountain top in less than a few hours of travel. Would go back there in a heartbeat. Enjoyed it a lot more than Maui or Oahu. Even the tsunami evacuation in the middle of vacation didn't dampen my enthusiasm.

The 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and Tsunami? Yeah, I was in Japan for that.

No, this would've been in October of 2012. Alaskan quake, I believe.

I was home for that one. I have a very different perspective after the 9.1 quake in Japan. The 2011 tsunami did some serious damage here. I have no desire to see that repeated.

Some California cities got hammered by the 2011 Tsunami. Santa Cruz, especially.

Why is it so hard to understand D to E? When you are fully charged, say 290 miles worth, yea you might get that if the road is flat, no wind, mild temps, and for sure no accessories on at all. Change any of those variables and bingo, fewer miles to travel. How about stopping to hitch up a loaded trailer and pull that behind you the rest of the way, the car isn't going to know before you left home that you were going to pick up a trailer midstream, now did it? Get my drift? Not so hard now right?

Just like how an ICE calculates D to E.

That’s how it used to work, and yes it was simple. In freezing temps, my DTE used to show about 200 miles and that’s what I could get in normal driving with no wind.
The new DTE shows 285 in freezing temps and the only way I can get anywhere near that is to get out and push.

No, it’s not hard at all. But it’s less useful than it was.
