I really like my new Mach E. I haven’t found much not to like. But I admit that the “Mustang” monicker embarrasses me a bit.
One of my buddies asked me what I thought they should have called it? Before the question I had not given that any thought. I spent an evening contemplating and I have my answer. What is yours?
The MME is the first Ford I have owned but I grew up with Fords, learned to drive in a ‘58 Country Sedan, 292 V8 3 on the tree with overdrive. I remember when the Mustang was introduced and what a departure it was after the failure of Edsel.
and it occurred to me that the era held the answer to what the Mach E should have been named……(Drumroll)…..The Galaxy! A long dormant name from Ford’s past that has the connotation of being about something extra terrestrial and beyond our reach.
Missed opportunity if you ask me.

I love that Ford named it after the mustang nameplate. It's fast, handles like a sports car, brakes great and has the looks. I could care less that it doesn't have a V8. I smoke V8 mustangs. I think people that say"that's not a mustang" are not thinking clearly. Ford calls it a mustang and they didn't just slap a logo on it and call it a day. We have evolved as humans, so has the mustang lol. Just my .02

I get the impression Ford didn't really want to call it a Mustang themselves - but needed a recognizable nameplate for some instant recognition. And ultimately they also saw the benefit of the conflict in the name. But that's nothing more than a hunch.

The trouble with pulling an old name and reusing it (like the Galaxy) is that the younger buyers you might want to attract to your fancy new EV aren't going to have any ties to that name whatsoever, if they even recognize it at all. They'd end up right in the same place that the European Ford business is currently in with the new "Capri". You have a bunch of people that used to have Capris and are upset because it's not anything at all like a Capri and another bunch of people that know nothing of that name and just don't care.

Good point.

A revival of the Thunderbird name would have been appropriate.
Other than the 55-57, I never really liked Tbirds. But it does actually fit. A fast compact luxury car. And not one at the lower end of the price scale.

Oh boy, this again. Ought to be amusing...

Ford makes the car. Ford gets to name the car. They chose to call it a Mustang. Its a Mustang. Thinking it should've been a Thunderbird or Galaxy or any number of names that have been retired doesn't matter. The designers were told in 2018/19 when they first presented the EV they were developing to execs was to rethink a number of things, including the phrase "think Mustang" in terms of the performance and styling. They took that advice to heart.

I am perfectly happy with the Mustang name.

But I also totally would have brought back the Thunderbird for an EV.

Um, no to the Galaxy name in the UK please. The Ford Galaxy minivan was only discontinued last year ?

I'm not sure what they should have called it, but definitely "Mustang" was a cynical choice in order to cash in on the name recognition. IMO, this electric crossover SUV has nothing to do with the legacy of the Mustang moniker. It was born, heart and soul, in 2021 as its own entity. Just wish they would have named it something original. Oh well, c'est la vie.
