Of course your phone or watch need to call for you. Your thumbs don’t work! ??
Just the right one (for now)... But that's why dog invented Siri! ?

This. The problem these days is that nobody needs to memorizes phone numbers anymore because they're all saved in our phones. Everyone should at least memorize one number to serve as their emergency contact. Either a significant other, a parent, a sibling, or a close friend. Someone who will drop everything to help you if truly needed. There are any number of situations where you might lose your own phone and need to use someone else's - but they won't have that all-important number.
Perhaps we should all consider making a hard copy wallet card with emergency info on it like who to contact, medical info, etc.

I have an ID.me small metal piece on my wristband with two emergency contact numbers. If I am out, they can call those. I ride bicycles, so my wife feels better.

I'm not too worried. My phone will call 911. If to doesn't, my watch will call 911. If it doesn't, the car will tell my phone to call 911. If it doesn't, there's likely someone around to call. If there isn't, ??‍♂...
All relying on the phone to not have flung out the window and shattered though.

"If it doesn't, there's likely someone around to call."

Not all.

Edit: Additionally my Watch has cellular and will happily work without my phone...

Also, as long as the phone survived the crash, it would (likely) call even if thrown outside the vehicle.

and why I recommend you always keep the phone in your pocket.

It was July 2009 and I was driving my 2009 Ford Edge. My phone was connected to the car and I had enabled 911 assist. The phone was snuggled tightly in a phone cradle that mounted in one of the cup holders. After trying many mounts, including suction cup types, I found this to be the best and most reliable phone holder.

I was on my way to work and was passing through a very busy intersection when it happened. I was T-Boned by an oil tanker big rig. I didn't see it coming and was completely surprised when it occurred. All I remember from that moment was that I had temporarily lost my hearing. It was the loudest bang I've ever heard when the both of the side air curtains deployed. But now I was disoriented and could hardly hear. Things were spinning. I was dazed. In the moment when I finally gained some senses I saw that the side windows were covered with deflated airbags and the horn was honking. People outside of the car were yelling at me. I think they were asking if I needed help.

I reached over to get my phone to call 911, why didn't 911 assist not work?, but it was nowhere to be found. The holder was there but not the phone. A cursory look around and it was nowhere to be found. I sat for what seemed forever, my car on the wrong side of the street with incoming traffic gingerly driving around me, trying to gain my senses. I felt helpless and tried to figure out what to do next. I decided to get out of my car before I got hit again. Fortunately the T-bone side was the passenger side but I gotta tell you it's not easy to get out of a car when the side curtain passenger air bag has deployed. I found myself crawling out under the airbag mechanism while feeling dizzy and nauseous. I understand why people throw up in those situations. People helped me get over the curb and offered help. I asked them to find my phone. I needed to call my wife..

It turns out that I was not hurt enough to be taken to the hospital. However, I did end up with permanent hearing loss in my left ear over time. Eventually, after what seemed like an eternity, someone found my phone. It was on the floor way back under the passenger seat kinda wedged in a small gap. I was then able to call my wife. I was also able to call the auto club for a tow and call work to let them know I wouldn't be in that day. A phone is such an important tool in a time like this.

My car was totaled but it was less than 6 months old and insurance replaced it at full sticker price since it was less than a year old.

It was a harrowing experience that I hope you will never experience in your life. But the one thing that I got out of that is that I ALWAYS keep my phone in my pocket when I drive. If I need to charge it I use a wired charger connected while the phone is still in my pocket. Had my car caught fire I would have been without an important tool. Keeping it in my pocket will always be my mode of operation. I recommend that you use this method also.
Wow! So sorry to hear, and I’m glad you’re (mostly) ok.
I’ll point out that people with Apple Watch should have a bit less to worry about since, even if they don’t have an Apple Watch with cellular, it’s likely to maintain the Bluetooth link to a phone.
Also, newer Apple Watches and iPhones have crash detection.

You are assuming the phone has survived the crash...

The other alternative is an Apple Watch with cellular. Then the phone becomes superfluous.

I keep an emergency satellite communicator in my vehicles. Mostly because I go hiking a lot, but I figured why keep them in a closet when I'm not hiking. So, I just leave them in the car/truck.

I think it's a little extreme to say don't use wireless charging. I don't think I've plugged in a phone in years.

While you are all interested in cell phones being available and functional, the real concern should be that if your cell phone is not secured, in a crash it becomes another missile inside the vehicle that can hurt you badly.
Glad you were not hurt.

I wear a Road ID regularly, started wearing it because of the bike. One of the problems with a first responder getting info from the phone if the phone owner is disabled in an accident could revolve around access codes and face ID being enabled.
