So I got a really good rock chip in my windshield that is going to require the windshield to be replaced. Insurance is with Geico and they will replace it for $50 but it won't be OEM. To select OEM will run an additional $700. What am I going to be missing without it? Safelight is doing the replacement and tells me the glass is the same exact spec as OEM but weren't sure about noise dampening and the like. The chip is in the upper passenger side corner and isn't visible from inside but it is spread to the edge and who knows how much it will grow once winter gets here. Is it worth $700 to keep the Ford logo?

Another thing to consider is timing. Apparently the OEM windshield is on back order (or so I'm told by several dealers). So it may be a while if you want to get an OEM windshield rather than 3rd party.

OEM windshield has whatever coating that dampens RF signals. You may be better off with the generic glass.

OEM glass may have the IRR (infrared reflecting) coating which reduces heat buildup in the vehicle.

The soundscreen is something I don't want to lose but 99% of my driving is around town and is it worth $700?

This is a great example (except to OP) of why you want to carefully understand the difference between insurance companies and their coverage. The cheaper the policy, the more likely they'll push stuff like this.

I've replaced windshields, and every time my insurance company puts in OEM glass via Safelite.

Exactly. Safelight told me that Geico was one of the only companies that doesn't included that. I figured it would cost me some out of pocket but $700 seems excessive. Can't be that much of a difference between the OEM and the generic windshield in price.

Just like health insurance. I hear people talk about how cheap they got insurance. Wait til you need it. Be ready to hear your policy don't cover this or that. You basically just have a piece of paper no health insurance.

See if you're required to use Safelite... I doubt it. If you can select your own glass replacement place, then see if a local Ford dealer can do it. They should be using OEM parts that way.

I used Safelite for a glass replacement. They were going to use a third party glass until I asked them to use the OEM part. They complied, at no extra charge, explaining to me that American Family Insurance will reimburse them for OEM glass as long as the current calendar year is within one year of the manufacturer's stated model year. (I drive a 2021 and the glass was replaced in December 2022.)

I'm in Arizona... A lot of this stuff is state and carrier specific, so ask your provider.

I had a smalll chip in passenger sde but it would not pass the state inspection. Since I was doing the glass recall the dealer covered the labor and gave me a discount on the windshield. Total cost to me was $770 and my insurance is covering that. It only took 3 days to get the windshield after it was ordered. List price for the windshield was $1060.

I am in NJ, have Geico Ins and recently replaced the windshield in my 21 Select. Put the claim in and understood that I had a $500 deductible. I went to a local glass shop, gave my vin # and they installed a non-Ford windshield. I didn't care about the Ford logo, I was more concerned with the rain sensor wipers working. I paid the full price of $1300 and sent the receipt (which did not state dealer part or otherwise) into Geico and they reimbursed me the balance after deducting the $500. I did not notice any difference in sound, but to be fair, I am not extremely particular with that. But if there was a huge difference, I'm sure I would have noticed. I did discover later that if I went to their recommended shop that the cost would have been $50 out of pocket. If I need to replace again, that's exactly what I will do.

I’d recommend checking with local glass places. Safelight seems to have a corner on the market with the insurance companies, but I don’t think you are obligated to use them. I’m sure the insurance companies have some sort of deal with safelight to link directly to their glass claims website.

Oh there can be. Acrostic glass plus IRR coating? It adds up in a hurry.
