We had snow yesterday with temps in the low 30°F's. @AEtherScythe and I had to drive down to his parents house for his brother's birthday. When we left the house it was a steady snowfall and 32°F.

I'm driving and the snow seems to be melting as soon as it hits any surfaces ... so the roads were wet but nothing to worry about.

Anyway, I noticed the adaptive cruise is letting me get a little close to the car in front of me. I glance at the driver display and notice that the image of the bubble around our car does NOT show the icon for a car ahead of us and I realize our car isn't seeing that car. I disengage cruise and take over (another reason why drivers should be paying attention).

A few moments later I get a warning on the driver display "Pre-Collision Assist Not Available". Just as a test I try to re-engage cruise and the car gives me another warning that it thinks the sensor is blocked. I'm a little baffled because it looks like the snow is melting as soon as it hits anything. I check the temp and the sensor in the car reads 32°F exactly.

We had to stop at a store on the way to see his brother. I step out, look at the front of the car, and see this:

Ahhhh.... so THAT explains it! The sensor was, in fact, actually blocked (for those unaware, the forward facing radar is the flat spot between the active grille louvers). I reached down to check it and it was about 1/2" thick of basically slush (which tells me that the temperature sensor is bang-on accurate because in physics, slush is *exactly* at the freezing point for water. It cannot get warmer unless it completely melts and it cannot get colder unless it completely freezes.)

On the drive back home the temperature was up to 36°F ... nothing accumulated on the car so it was happy.

I expect this is really only an issue when having that "wet" snowfall ... temps very close to 32°F. When it's much colder, the snow is dry and doesn't really stick to surfaces as easily and any warmer and it just melts.

The ice scraper and window squeegee/brush are now in the back hatch. <sigh>

I had exactly the same occur in my f150 and my Mach E in heavy rainfall. Haven't had snow yet with my MME though

How did you find your range and consumption changed in those colder temperatures?

Right now its -10c in Winnipeg and we just had 6 inches of snow in 24 hours, the Mache was fine, though the ranges dropped from ~400 km down to ~228km on the GOM. I suspect its the short trips and having to heat the cabin up everytime.

On the drive down (32°F) I was getting 2.5 miles/kWh with seat heaters at 'automatic', steering wheel heater, and cabin set to 68°F. About 40% on surface streets (45 mph) and about 60% on freeways (70 mph).

On the way back I took a route that was more direct ... but no freeways. But it was a road that does fairly well with timed traffic signals and speeds between 45 and 55 the entire way. Temps were slightly warmer at 36°F and the car got 2.8 miles/kWh.

Winter came to us here in SoCal yesterday. After a weekend of temps in the mid 90s it only hit 81 yesterday and today only 72. Brrrrrr.

Keep posting this SPAM and see how long you last on this forum... ?

27 last night, blowing out my sprinklers after lunch as it's 40 and sunny now. Tomorrow 60s but raining, then back to 40s and below. Scraper in trunk soon...

Note to self - cross Winnipeg off the “must visit” list. No place where they put minus signs in front of temperatures has any redeeming qualities ?

I’ve always said that Chicago would be a perfect city if they could just transport it, without any changes, to south Florida. I really like Chicago, for the four months of the year it has decent weather (note: I despise the traffic into and out of Chicago and their airport rates just above my home airport, Philadelphia, among the world’s worst airports).

I guess I would call the Chicago weather much nicer than Flordia - especially south Flordia! How can you stand it. We visit Disney in February and it is still way to hot! I will take -20F over 90F any day of the week. It is much easier to gt warm than try to cool off.

Perfect weather is when you can work outside all day without sweating!

I'm pretty disappointed the car doesn't heat the radar (cover? surface?) to melt snow. Considering it was designed in Michigan, rather than California, you'd think they would have added that feature. Sigh.

That's a very nice combo. It brings up some questions: Can the ice block the cooling vents and does that matter at this temperature? Also, how would you clean the sensors: don't use chemicals like windshield ice remover and make sure you don't scratch these with the scraper.

New world we are all learning!

? everyone has preferences and I totally get that ? Mine is for warm places. My favorite part of California for example, is Death Valley. The only time I’m warm in the winter is when I “run”. To stay marginally on-topic, heated seats and heated steering wheels are the best things ever invented in cars. That’s why I was overjoyed to find out about automatic heated seats. I will admit I wish the Mustang Mach E had ventilated seats as well (see my earlier comments about air conditioning ?)

I'll always remember one of my overnights in Redondo Beach. I was in shorts and a t-shirt walking at the beach and this lady with her young children had on down parka's and caps.
