Workplace (Mostly) Only Charging...?

I’ve asked this question over on the EV subreddit, but I figured I would hopefully get some good opinions/settle my anxiety here.

I currently live in a pretty old fashioned condo community with no ability to install a home charger. (I am working with a few other owners/renters to push for L2 chargers to be installed in a few lots, but it’s probably long odds at this point.) So, I won’t be able to do L1/L2 charging at home.

BUT:

I work in a mixed retail/commercial building and the garage has J1772 and DC fast chargers. They’re paid, but I don’t really mind paying given the convenience and since I won’t see any energy bill increase at home anyway. Additionally, there are EA DC chargers and EVgo J1772 and DC within about 5-10 minutes of my condo, and our local Wegmans, while about 15-20 minutes away, offers free charging while you shop for your groceries.

My daily commute is 9 miles there and 9 miles back, and the occasional errand and/or taking my son to the local playground. My thinking is the ER AWD I have on order would be fine for my use without access to a home charger, especially given that likely within the next 6-18 months, we’ll move to a single family with a garage I can do whatever the Hell I want in. But I still have a little anxiety about it.

I was wondering if anyone here had an opinion on the feasibility of my plan (and/or could give me some assurance hopefully).

Yeah, it’s not terrible. A full day charge over my 8-9 hours there would be like twelve bucks. Which is probably 40% of what I pay for gas currently every two weeks or so.

Then I think you’ll be fine with only a 9 mile commute. My commute is 10 miles and my current PHEV only gets about 25 miles of electric range. Even that was enough that I’ve driven almost exclusively on electricity for 3 years with 90% of my charging occurring at work.

Yeah, I’m thinking even if I do a full charge like once a work week on average, I’d be okay, and in a pinch I have the two DC fast sites near my condo.

Sounds like a good plan. The ChargePoint station at my office is free, so I plan on charging the MME there once a week or so.

That’s awesome. Unfortunately for me the garage at my job is publicly accessible so it’s naturally a paid situation. But I may definitely avail myself of that free charging at Wegmans, even if it’s out of the way.

With such a short commute and charging available at your work you should be good to go.

For people like us that are not able to charge overnight (I Street Park), you can use the 8 hour work day as an equivalent when needed. I'm in sales so drive all over Northern California, but I generally am in the office for a few hours 3 days or so each week. There's also a ton of Chargepoint near my house, so in a pinch I'll just park the car there and then walk home to work or chill for a few hours while it charges. I could use the exercise anyway lol

My workplace (when I get to go back to it) has workplace charging, and I plan for that to be the primary method for me, as I only have a 120V outlet at home. I think given what you describe, it should be easily doable to charge at work and not worry about it at home.
