Alex on Autos was less optimistic about the model Y range. They estimated it to be around 225 miles:

Of course as with any range estimate. Estimate is the key word.
As many of you will find out once you get your Mach-Es your range will likely have a "range variation" of 100-125 miles depending on a multitude of conditions. If you are expecting to always get the rated range on any of the EVs on the market, you are likely to be disappointed.

This is true and also makes a concern of where the DC fast chargers are located. If I am going to just plug in at home and drive within a 75 mile radius of home, then why spend over 50k for a car that is replaced with ice/phev when traveling longer?

I found this video educating

I too decided to cancel my Mach E reservation and bought a used Model 3 from Tesla. This will do until the MME and others come out and I can compare since I would prefer an SUV. But the Model 3 has been good so far. A friend of mine has had one for almost 2 years with no issues (and no garage to charge).

Range has been pretty much within estimates, even with AC running. Done a couple of 300 mile round trips and no anxiety. Supercharger availability is definitely a factor. Hope EA steps up, if not 50KW Charge Point chargers are not going to cut it. I also have spent only $15 on charging charges and about 30 minutes to charge on each trip.

I do like the MME and maybe I will get one eventually but peace of mind about charging was one factor I was considering and the Delmarva peninsula is an EA desert.

I just hope we get some news from Ford soon (full option list, pricing, and additional GT color would be nice).
That way we can talk about something other than what has taken up the vacuum instead: discussions about delays and everyone who is announcing cancellations of MME reservations to buy a Tesla or Jaguar EV instead. (Which are good topics but I'm ready for some more positive and exciting discussions.)

I suspect we’ll hear more information within the next 3 weeks. ;)

Because for many people, that's where 90% of their annual miles will be -- daily drives around home.

Since our household is going to have 2 vehicles in the garage anyway, one being a BEV and the other an ICE makes perfect sense. The BEV gets most of the around-home miles (at 1/3rd the fuel cost, plus lower maintenance costs) and the ICE gets some of them plus all of the road trip miles. Best of both worlds.

Now, if someone only has a single vehicle for everything, then the decision gets trickier. You have to weigh the benefits and compromises.

The ideal usage for a BEV is as the daily commute vehicle charging at home.

Model Y is easily gonna be the most popular Tesla. There are probably 4-5 Model 3s within two blocks of me now and that'll likely double with the Y. After driving an Outback for 5 years, I don't want to have the same car as everyone else anymore.

I am leaning towards telling the dealer to change my reservation from Premium AWD ER to GT.

1) Wife thinks GT looks better
2) 3.X seconds 0-60 will forever be quick
3) 98% of my drives are within 200mi of my house so range isn't too worrisome
4) 235 width tires makes sense

My hesitation is because

a) more range is always better on road trips
b) 5.5s 0-60 isn't THAT slow
c) GT doesn't come out til Spring 2021
d) GT options are gonna cost me $$

What I find encouraging about that is when the talk shifts to miles per kWh....it’s around 3 in that case, with the model Y’s 75kWh battery. Apply the same efficiency to Ford’s 98.8kWh battery and you get around 300 miles. I expect Ford won’t be as efficient as Tesla as they’re relatively new to the market...but it does give me hope that the Mach E’s usable range may be significantly higher than the Model Y.

If I were to wager a prop bet, it would be that model Y has the range advantage. Time will tell.
Me too. I fear people may start setting their expectations too high and then be disappointed when range comes in pretty close to what Ford predicted.
