Roof and Windshield Recall

I’m trying to remember where I heard it, but my understanding was that the sealant that was used in the recalled build dates was not the proper formulation so it’s not as strong as it should be. So once that was discovered the sealant was switched out at the factory. Newer builds were not impacted because the issue was fixed.

For the pano roof I’m not sure about how the newer builds are different. Maybe now they are adding the extra sealant during production?? Don’t know. Guess someone with a newer build would need to pull down the headliner to see if there’s a bead of sealant on the inside of the pano glass.

Sorry, I mean regarding the TSB for exterior wind noise, does that mean after February 2021 they started putting the foam strip as standard? That's what seems odd, newer cars don't need it but those that had older cars reported the newer cars sound the same, wind noise wise.

My FE was built in Nov. 2020 and delivered in Feb 2021. It’s been pretty glitchy and I’ve had problems (12v battery; door locks, paak, excessive wind noise, etc).

It’s been at the dealer for over a week for the windshield/roof recall (which I hope fixes the horrible wind noise), as well as:
- SSM 49676,
- CustomerSatisfaction 21P22;
- TSB 21-2091;
- customer satisfaction 21B53, and
- anything else they find

I really would like to see some of the issues I’ve been living with get resolved. That said, I worry my MMe is a delicate ecosystem and the fixes above might things worse.

We shall see.

Issue: This may be due to the underflush condition of the windshield to glass roof at the top header area being greater than maximum spec of 4.4 mm.

My guess is that they fixed the windshield/roof alignment process at the factory so newer builds would not require any filler in the gap.

Good news so far! I took the car in yesterday and called the body shop today. I talked to the Manager who told me he has his best employee working on my car. He said he has done several already with no problems whatsoever. I asked if a glass company came in to remove the windshield and he said yes and that mine was removed about an hour ago and is fine; no cracks or any problems. The glass company will be back when they are ready for the windshield to be re-glued. He told me he's shooting for Friday to be done but if that's not possible, Monday at the latest. He said that I will not be able to tell the work was even done and that this might decrease the wind noise I have heard. He also said the dealer has to do the software calibration on the camera so that I may not get it back the same day as it is returned. He made me feel a whole lot better about doing the recall now and told me my car will be fine. I'm not planning on getting it back this week and think next Monday or Tuesday are more likely. That will be a little over a week to have the 2 recalls done; the Customer Satisfaction software re-calibration; OTA 1.7.1 and the windshield camera re-calibrated.

Happy Update: My car was returned to my dealer at noon today and I went over there to inspect the work that was done. I can happily report that I absolutely cannot tell any work was done. The upholstery is fine, no dirt or smudge marks. I can't speak for others but I feel the work done was excellent and I highly recommend doing the glass recalls. I won't get Illinibird back until late Monday as they have to calibrate the front camera, perform the 1.7.1 OTA update, perform CSP 21P22 software calibration update and the Phone As A Key software update. ????

Oh yea of little faith. They did the work. They called at 4:30 and told me it was ready to pickup as all the software updates were done. When I got it home I found all the software updates were done with the exception of OTA 1.7.1 so I'll need to bring it back as per Ford.

Not yet, but I have it scheduled for 22 December at Autonation Ford in St. Pete. My windshield is currently cracked and they have already coordinated with the glass company who verified the windshield in stock at the dealer and insurance coverage. Dealer said it would probably take two days and I’m getting a loaner.

When my car was in this week for animal accident damage, I asked them to actually measure the alignment, and verify it was under 4.4mm. They confirmed it was. May 2021 build.

Good to know they at least rectified that issue in production. Definitely going to do the weather strip “mod” when I get mine back from the recall still.

Hey @hybrid2bev, as one of the few Ford employees on this forum that I'm aware of (I know there are others, but you're the only one I'm sure of) think you can confirm the issue I'm experiencing is a symptom of this glass recall? If not no worries, just thought I'd ask!

I'm noticing a creaking noise that can be heard coming from the rear of the pano glass when going over any uneven road, at any speeds (speed bumps, etc). It's a pretty scary sound and makes me feel like the glass will snap if stressed too much! Dealer is saying yes, that the recall will fix this, but I'm not entirely sure. Only seen one other forum member posting about this issue. Car has been at the dealership close to a month now waiting for the parts to come in to get the recall done. Any advise to pass on to my dealer would be welcomed!

Was able to kind of get a video of the creaking sounds, it's heard most right at the beginning and then again at the end of the clip:

That said the pano roof recall involves putting in foam seal and a urethane bead which I think would stabilize the glass.

Figure 14 shows the foam that is installed. Figure 15 shows the two foam pieces that are tucked in on either side of the roof antenna in back.

Tucking the foam into the rear:

It's a pretty substantial bead of urethane that is applied all around the glass, sealing the glass to the flange.

Apply urethane adhesive between the glass on both front and rear headers using the foam seal as a back stop to ensure the urethane wets out to both the flange and the glass. Repeat for the roof's side rails using the urethane as a back stop to acquire adhesive wet out to both the glass and the flange.

And updates on wind noise? Did you originally have some and now don't?
