I can't believe the repair costs. Watch weight in the rear.

I put mine in the lower position pretty soon after taking delivery. The space under the panel is almost useless. What is it - 3"? What can fit there? I have a couple of things I use for photo shoots that I keep in the back that seem small to me - light stand, tripod, umbrella - but they don't fit.

My complaint is not with the mount, but with the two-level idea in the first place!
When seats ate folded, upper position allows flat transition...

Would it make you feel better if it said they designed it to specifically ruin your personal day?

Get over it, man.
I am over it. I didn't start this tread to get waves of sympathy. It was to let others know the results of my bone headed move so they may avoid getting about a $1k repair estimate.

I actually expected the "you're a stupid ass-hat for having this happen" comments. I mean, it anonymous internet posts. I'd be a fool to expect anything else.

(I always keep it at the lowest position now. Can't be bothered to change it all the time)
I always keep mine in the low position anyway. I like having the lip on the backend when putting groceries and other loose stuff back there so it doesn't fall out when opening the liftgate.

I have to admit that we had the car for a couple months before I found out that the floor could be lowered. We had a fairly heavy load back there for our road trip and it handled it ok. I keep it lowered now mainly because the rubber floor mat fits better in that position.

Another reason to keep it low is because that flimsy privacy cover (and even the liftgate itself) is not very tall at all. Even a medium size suitcase gets hit by that cover (often popping it off) in the high position.

So if you have some heavy flooring boxes. They are heavy. Get some 4x4 block and put the floor on bottom and let the flooring flat across on lay to the 4x4's. Better yet slide the 4x4 under the raised shelf for some support. Ford must be thinking camping gear, golf bags, boxes without books. Sorry it didn't hold up.

Thx for the post. I never would have thought anyone woukd use such an idiotic design. Rav4 got it right.

I agree 1000%. He made a mistake because of something he didn't know, which we all have done. Many times. His post will help others learn before they do it.

I don't blame Ford, however. I think it is appropriate to take personal responsibility for making the mistake and damaging your car without attacking the company that made it. The design is fine, as long as you understand how it is designed, right?
No, I don't think the design is right. I pointed out what happened to another car guy physicist. He pointed out very small design changes that would have resulted in better force transfer without huge repair costs. Lower chance of damage, lower cost to repair failure.

Yes, I led with ignorance and suffered the consiquences. I've done product design. I can see ways to provide the same function with much lower cost of repair should a failure occurs.

I'll stand by my claim that it's an obvious failure spot, and a poor design because the cost of repair is 50x what it could be, with no increased cost of production.
I had the same thing happen to me. Never even knew that there were two positions for the trunk before it happened. Thankfully, Ford agreed to warranty the damage.
I am so jealous! I'm stuck on 1.7.1 AND didn't get the repair warranteed! I'm doubly screwed.

And I paid cash!

;)

Would somebody please point me to a video how to adjust the trunk position? This is totally new to me.

I understand your confusion and it took me about five minutes to figure it out. All you have to do is pull the floor out and slide it underneath the supports the OP broke. Then it will lay flat in the bottom level.

It helps if you fold your rear seats down first, before trying to remove the floor.

I agree Rockwallrick - the rubber mat fits nicely if floor is in the lower position. It fits terribly in the higher position; like the mat engineer didn’t talk with the seat engineer as it’s too long and bows due to interference with the rear seat back angle. Mat should be shorter or tapered edge to fit in both floor positions.

I did the same thing as the OP. Put too much weight in the back in the upper position and popped out the supports. I admit that I did not realize there was a lower position. I read this forum pretty regularly but missed the posts about it and because mine came with the all weather cargo mat already installed in the upper position I think it made it harder to realize it was adjustable. To the people who said the mat does not even fit well in the upper position I would disagree. It fits differently with the lip of the mat over the back edge of the cargo area.

I was hoping I could just buy the supports, drill out the old broken pins and replace. Can't believe this is almost $1000 fix at the dealer. Terrible design. I found a workaround though. A 2x4 on edge across the raised bump is a perfect height to support the floor if you want the upper position.

Why would anyone want the upper position?
