I’m currently using a Grizzl-e charging station plugged in to a 50:amp 14-50 outlet, and I need to get more length.

I’ve seen extension cords for sale for both the power side and the car side of the charger. Please help me choose among:

1. Use a cord to extend the power outlet.
2. Use a cord to extend the charger-to-car cable.
3. Don’t do it; the warnings in the MME manual aren’t just nannyism, they’re serious.

I have both, and i've used both with the STOCK Ford portable EVSE which only draws 30A at 240v. No issues with heat or charging issues. If you get a 14-50 extension cord, just make sure it's rated for 50amps.

I would not use an extension cord for more than temporary use. If it’s not long enough then you need to have an electrician move the 14-50 outlet. UL requirements on EVSEs limit input cord to less than 1’ and charging cord to less than 25’.

I think the actual best option is #4, get your 14-50 outlet extended to a new location that is closer to the vehicle (including on an outside pedestal if needed) - extension cords for that high of power are never really a great idea.

That said, if you just need to get something going, then I like the idea of extending the J1772 cord instead of the 14-50. That way the extension is wrapped in the additional GFCI protection of the GrizzlE, and the connectors are designed for more continuous outdoor use.

#1 is never a good idea

@JamieGeek can show you what he has used for #2. There are good J-1772 extension cords. That is a much better way to go than #1.

My fiance's family has all teslas so they have a tesla destination charger at their house. When I go visit them I use a tesla to j1172 adapter and then a j1172 30' extension cord and have never had any issues. I guess just make sure you use the right stuff?

The rules/codes are there for your protection. If I needed to do something like this I would do what others suggested and use a 50A extension to the Ford portable charger - but only for a temp application. If permanently needed I would get another circuit installed.

And they accepted you and let you plug in? ?

Thanks, all for your thoughts. @phidauex I like your thinking on this wrt extra protection from the EVSE circuitry.

The downside of warnings is that you never know if they’re actually important, like don’t “drink the drain cleaner”, or just complying with some regulation that no one takes seriously, like the millions of things that are “known to the state of California” to cause cancer.

What I’m trying to do, btw, is run the cable up the wall of my garage, across the ceiling, and then hanging down near the car, so it isn’t a tripping hazard. The 24’ that Grizzl-e supplies isn’t quite enough to get me there.

I second everyone's comments regarding only using a 50 amp extension cord as a temporary means until you can relocate the 14-50 outlet to a location that allows for the 25 foot charger cord to reach the car.

I have a Grizzl-E duo, and I have done something similar with one of my cables. the EVSE is mounted at the garage door. One cable is run outside, the other runs up to the ceiling and comes down mid garage for plug into the car.

theres nothing that says you cannot have the EVSE mounted on the ceiling.
move the outlet is your best solution.

In theory, nothing wrong with an extension cord IF all components are rated to handle the amperage. Moving the outlet is going to just splice the right size wires at the old outlet.

most extension cables limiting factor will be the end Components.
