My problem with mounting at the center of the ceiling is what to do with the cable when it’s not in use. My garage has no dividers in the center, just a big open space.

I saw a reference to a tool balance, but with 24’ of cable I don’t see how that could work.

I have both, and i've used both with the STOCK Ford portable EVSE which only draws 30A at 240v. No issues with heat or charging issues. If you get a 14-50 extension cord, just make sure it's rated for 50amps.
Hello. Would you be able to provide parts model # for both? I am looking for the same solution.

I’m currently using a Grizzl-e charging station plugged in to a 50:amp 14-50 outlet, and I need to get more length.

I’ve seen extension cords for sale for both the power side and the car side of the charger. Please help me choose among:

1. Use a cord to extend the power outlet.
2. Use a cord to extend the charger-to-car cable.
3. Don’t do it; the warnings in the MME manual aren’t just nannyism, they’re serious.
I would go for 1.
Nema 14-50 plug ends are a lot less expensive than a female/male J1722 extension.

just get a cord rated for 50a like this:

what if you just mounted the whole setup right next to the Ladder or on the wall with the ladder? (or I’m missing something)
mine is hanging from the center of the garage between the 2 bays.

This extension cord is listed as 50 amp with 10 gauge wires. I thought you need 6 gauge for that power rating, especially to receive a UL rating as claimed. ???
If you are going to actually put 50amps thru it for more than 3 hours, you probably should *not* use this cord. Using it for the MME, which will pull a max of 32 amps, you would *probably* be fine although the cord will probably get a little warm.

Not sure why you need extension; however, Mounting a 240 V outlet on the wall near the dolly by garage door would give you enough distance for both garage charging and outdoor charging with garage door open.

My original question about extension cords stemmed from my desire NOT to spend the money and/or time to relocate the existing outlet, which is on the wall against which I was standing when I took the picture above. My idea was to make one of the two cables long enough to rise to the ceiling, and traverse it to reach the wall on which you see the ladder. (Going horizontally is not an option because there are stairs and a door in the corner between the adjacent walls. )

As we’ve been very helpfully discussing this over the last few days I’m warming to the idea of biting the bullet and paying an electrician to move the outlet.

Using it for the MME, which will pull a max of 32 amps….
My understanding is that the MME can pull 40 amps when connected to a 50 amp circuit, and 48 amps from a 60 amp circuit. Where are you getting the 32 amp maximum?

I believe the MME can accept up to 48amps.... but that is when used with a hardwired charger, not plugged into a 50 amp outlet.

The (included) mobile charger puts thru 32amps max I believe.... intended for safe use via 14-50 outlet w 50amp breaker for 3+ hours of continuous use.

I think the 10 gauge is an error on the website. The picture shows this:

I have gone through similar. If I remember right you said you needed to move it 10 feet. If you are still up for doing most of the work I think you will find that the cost of moving the outlet will be similar in cost to the extension cable and you will be happier with the setup.

I would put a shutoff switch where your current outlet is and use that as a superior method to splice in the new wire. So reusing the your old junction box and outlet, the only new costs are the wire ($60 for ROMEX NM-B and $50 for THHN), a safety shutoff box ($95), and $5-10 for metal conduit.

Building an extension cord to do the same distance would be $60 for wire, $40 for a good plug, $20-40 for a good outlet, and $5 for a junction box to mount the outlet.

Hope this helps.

Good approach. I like the idea of using a switch to connect the new and old wires rather than dealing with wire nuts at that gauge. Not sure I understand why I need both Romex and THHN.

Sorry, you don't need both. Giving you options. Short conduit you could easily pull either wire, I would use THNN, or you could open the drywall and run the ROMEX, just depends on how you want to run it.
