is it possible though that the 38 is for the extended now and maybe closer to 30 for std?
Maybe, but I wouldn't make that conclusion from what was said near the end of that video. They were clearly using numbers off the top of their heads (and got a few wrong). 38 is too specific of a number to not just be the existing SR number he threw out instead of the ER number (45).

If there really was a known improvement in the 45 and 38 minute 10-80% charging times, and they were ready to release it, it wouldn't have just been mentioned off the cuff like that. It would be press release worthy.

A significant reduction in that 45 minute number would be headline news.

Youre probably right unless theyre still testing maybe a future announcement . We'll see

Also note that nearly every time they talk about charging they say “on a 150kW charger.” So, Ford, what can it do on a faster than 150kW charger? I have been very impatiently waiting for months for them to reveal the real rate.
It's repeatedly stated as charging "up to 150 kW", so I really doubt it's allowed to go any higher. At least at present. Maybe a future OTA update though.

It was clear the one news announcement they made were the new 0-60 times. Showing the Mach E 1400 video behind the new times was the slickest new production they shared. The rest of the numbers were old.

I’m really surprised they haven’t done a formal news item on those 0-60 numbers!

From what I understand it's because they don't consider the acceleration times to be static.

I wonder if the charge curve can even be variable based on external temperature? The whole point of a charge taper is to prevent too much damaging heat in the battery. If ambient temp is 40F instead of 90F, maybe they tweak the curve on the fly to allow more charging power longer?

Or more specifically, let's say 100F is the "safe" temp limit for the battery to charge at (just a random example). Maybe the charge curve is dynamic, meaning they simply apply as much power to flow through to keep it under 100F? Which could vary based on conditions?

Just an thought. No idea if that's the way it works.

I finally got around to watching the actual video. My take is that nothing changed. I think they just misspoke a little off the top of their heads referring to "20-80%" (really meaning 10-80), and tapering "after 80%" (as the question was read).

They pretty much confirmed that all batteries (except the really expensive ones, which he clearly meant theirs is not) slow down on charging as they gradually fill up. You could tell they didn't want to throw cold water on the charging time of the MME by giving exact taper info, but made it clear it's the same basic characteristics as others in it's price class. Which likely means a profile similar to:

charging-time.jpg
recomputing for 1.21 gigawatts

Actually you can find multiple studies which show degradation according to temps, charge time also but i didnt post it here because i didnt think it was relevant.

I don’t think we’ll know for sure until we get the Mach-E in our hands. Things could change via an OTA update at some point too, so who knows?
Exactly. Tesla released an OTA that upped the model 3 charging significantly.

I'm surprised they haven't shown the car going from 0-60.

Yep, that was me. I saw one here last October. Also, Darren Palmer once mentioned Alaska testing. I’ll be sure to update the forum on real-world arctic testing when my FE gets here in December. Not that Canadians and Michiganders can’t do a reasonable imitation of cold, but -25 is for amateurs. -40 is in the ballpark, but a week or so at -50 should be a real test.
Will look forward to the reviews. Leaving your MME outside, covered or heated garage? Big state; what part of Alaska will its home be?
I'm pretty sure they said the warranty was at 70% yesterday.
70% of 98.8 or 88 KWh?
The image was also shown to press on November. You can see it in Jalopnik's article on the engineering behind the Mach-E.
Would be nice to see a realistic, updated rendering of the complete chassis (hi-Rez). Hard to find.

How much variance do you think there is? Not considering low battery state.

Good question... I was making the assumption it was on the total capacity of 98.8.
Real do not think it is a big deal as 30% of both numbers would be a major problem for ford (LG) if it is across the board. If push comes to shove I would assume Ford will base it of the 88 "usable". Just a gut as I see no other valid reason for such a high decrease in usable. Range is number 1 in BEV's at this stage; poor decision from my perspective to adopt such a huge decrease in range for ????.

I would think it would be 70% of what's visible to the user (68kw/88kw) through the UI or from measuring the charge that goes into the car. The upper buffer can never be charged and the lower buffer is effectively always charged - so you have no way to effectively measure either.

I live in the interior outside Fairbanks - so the coldest part of Alaska. Normally my cars stay in a heated garage at home and outside, uncovered at work. As soon as we get a really cold night, mid Januaryish, I’ll leave it outside overnight for week or so and see what happens.

I figure a successful, real world test in worst-case, Alaska winter conditions should give a warm and fuzzy (pun intended) for the MME’s worldwide buyers who also deal with challenging winters.

I’m not expecting any major MME cold weather issues. I’ve seen Porsche, Hyundai, and almost all the US manufacturers testing here the last few winters.
