That is a general rule of assembly line management. For Mach E it may not work.
  • FE is effectively just the Premium with a few parts swapped out. There shouldn't be much time difference.
  • Current estimate is the orders are 80% Premium and 15% FE (which is pretty much a Premium)

California Route 183%
First Edition4115%
Premium22480%

Not much option for line flexibility.
True, but if you compare a Mach-E to something a bit more complex, say F-150's with their 2-door, extended cab, or crew cab options (not to mention 4x2 or 4x4 and differing bed lengths), then *all* the Mach-E configrations are simple.

I would imagine that the biggest complexities for building Mach-E's are: SR or ER and RWD or AWD. In both those items its simply the presence or absence of parts--not completely different bodies.

So I would bet it really doesn't matter what Mach-E is built next in line...(do I grab from parts bin A or parts bin B?)

Besides: If they only have to build 8 CA Rt 1's...might as well get those overwith first right? then don't have to worry about them anymore! none of this weeks to build. Just 8 should take an hour or two right? (Yes I know the world is larger than the forums here....! :) ).

Any mixing will likely not be ER AWD premiums, because as you point out, the difference between that and FE is small.

RWD variants, standard range variants, no glass roofs variants would make sense to balance the lines a little.

BTW, one way they could do that is simply mix more of the FCTP's and FEs together. Basically save some of the FCTPs to mix them in with the FEs, since the FCTPs will be of various trims. Might even be able to move the Oct 26 date up a little that way too.

If they're all being held in lots at the plant until Nov 23 OKTB anyway, it really shouldn't matter that they mix some FCTBs and FEs together.
Yeah I see the possibility of what you are saying to be more likely than other customer Trims below the FE (although a small number of Rt1 or Select could be included) - this is one way they can balance producing the FCTPs and FEs in similar time frames

No but about it. You're saying exactly what I meant to say.

Agreed. That's where you see differences in numbers. Within the Premiums, you have:

From a production standpoint, I think they were wishing for a few more selects. The supply chain for large curved glass roofs presents an interesting challenge. But everyone seems to want that feature!

I actually could care less about the glass roof (at this point at least, I may love it eventually). I bet they are truly wishing that had more options and individual flexibility within each trim level.

I don't know. The glass roof alone could necessitate extra steps. Maybe extra wiring for the front motor on AWDs. Or rear seat installation has different steps for the ER battery.

Here is an interesting tidbit from a FB ME Group - this person must not be on the Forum. He has a Premium ER AWD (I am Confused though by the Price difference he states) which he ordered in January being built the SAME week as my FE.

It is my understanding (given some of the insider's posts) that the FE builds will have other trim's "sprinkled in the mix" because it takes different amount of time/effort to make the different trims and thus the line moves more efficiently when there is a mix and not all a single trim.
A perfect world is where there is only one trim level and zero optional equipment. Super easy to set up an assembly process (no Tesla jokes, please, they're tryin' REAL hard).

The fun starts when you add trim levels or options. For example, say Mark just has to have his FE with the optional chicken wing warming module in the frunk. Now you have to add a spot on the line, and an operator, to install it. So what's the problem?

The operator needs something to do for the other 300 units being built that day. He is known as "trapped labor". You gotta find something else for him/her to do on all the other vehicles. So you give him the "chilled start button" install that is only available on Hawaiian units, and so on, and so on... hence, you "sprinkle in" some other units/options to keep him as busy as possible.

Now kinda the opposite can happen. Let's say the chicken wing warmer is on "delayed availability". You now have to reschedule Mark's unit (and all his chicken wing lovin' friends vehicles) to another later date (FYI, Mark's face ☹). When the wing warmers finally are available, we might "batch build" the 1000 units that need them all a row. No "sprinkling", Mark wants his damn car. Now.

This kinda explains why its so hard to pin down a delivery date....

I bet there are a ton of folks with a 11/23 "build" date.....at least from the dealer's point of view. Even if they see it as OKTB....it's really a build date to them because the net effect is the same.

Just my $0.02....

That's why the date is the 18th for yours.

Guys, I knew that.

I should not have posted that same screen shot from when I was asking that question on another thread here. I was only posting it to show my original order. Sorry for the confusion.

Hey Guys,

Just got this answer from my Dealer here in Bay Area, California. my reservation number is 5XXX for a premium SR RWD. Converted just earlier this month.

" Thank you for your patience, your order got pulled yesterday. That means your order will now get a scheduled built date to get built, the date when we find out its scheduled to get built will be 10/22. When we get to that day the system will then tell me the week your Mach E is going to get built, from there it should be a 4 week turnaround. If you have any more questions please don’t hesitate to reach out, thank you. "

I have a feeling that this means it will only get built in Jan/Feb. But I'll keep y'all posted

Ron,

Now you have me really bummed that the FE conversion process didn't allow for any options to be added. I want that wing warmer!
