It's a ridiculously low 48 MPH. His 80 MPH comment is meaningless. They don't give us a number at a continuous 80 MPH, they give us a number that's an average of many speeds (just one of which happens to be 80 MPH).

In cold weather, you will be losing anywhere from 35% to 50% range. The RWD EV's will be a little more efficient also. Did a trip last year in a tesla model 3 performance at 20 degrees and lost about 26% in range. Most of the trip was on the interstate.

Just curious - why do you say 48 MPH is low? My daily commute to the office (well, when I actually go to the office these days) takes anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 minutes, almost all of it “expressway” driving. The door-to-door distance is 22 miles. I did the drive once or twice in about 30 minutes in the very early days of the lockdown when roads were “deserted”, but under regular conditions, my car will rarely see sustained driving speeds above 45 MPH.

Because the assumption is when they say "highway" mileage they mean JUST on the highway, in the same way "city" mileage is just stop and go driving with no highway component.

In addition to it being a misnomer, supplying the usage on a sustained 65-75mph highway and sustained 20-30mph stop and go would allow one to figure out their expected fuel usage in all variety of combinations. For all cases one could multiply the percentage of each part of a journey by the corresponding fuel usage in that segment to get a more accurate fuel estimate.

For most people, their daily commute is short enough that it doesn't come close to pushing the limits of range, even if some of it is on the highway. I know there are exceptions (people that have very long commutes), but that's not most people.

The drive that typically pushes the limits and requires road charging is the infrequent lengthy road trip (many hundreds of miles, or even 1000+), like a vacation. Those usually aren't in slow rush hour traffic, it's usually out on the open road crossing states. Usually at interstate speed limits.

Yes but since Ford doesn't make "cars" anymore, I have to compare Model 3 to Mach-E. That was Ford's choice.
That might make sense in a world without a Tesla Model Y, but since it exists, the Model Y is the only logical comparison.

For now, it seems like the best resource we have is the Car & Driver test. Hope they keep updating that for all new BEVs. Unfortunately it comes out too late for early adopters.

Again... while I don't compare the price of the Y to the Mach-E, because I'm not interested in buying a Y... the Mach-E can't match the Y's range either.
That really depends on what number Ford used for its mileage estimate. If it was presenting the expected real-world average mileage estimate, then the EPA number for the Mach E might very well exceed the EPA Tesla estimate.

I'm getting somewhat worried about the range on the GT.

235-250 miles is looking increasingly silly as Tesla Model Y Performance range gets over the 300 mi barrier.
I would suggest you wait until the actual Mach E numbers are released. Also, is range the only decision criteria?
