TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
Wireless Accessory Charger Inoperative/Poor Performance With Magsafe Charging iPhones - Built On Or Before 17-Apr-2022
22-2265
01 July 2022

This bulletin supersedes 22-2141.

Model:

Ford
2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E
Built on or before 17-Apr-2022

Summary

This article supersedes TSB 22-2141 update the issue, action, and Service Procedure.

Issue: Some 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E vehicles built on or before 17-Apr-2022 may exhibit the wireless charger inoperative or poor performance when using some Apple™ iPhone models that use MagSafe wireless charging including iPhone 12 and 13. This may be due to limited compatibility with the wireless accessory charging module (WACM). To correct the condition, follow the Service Procedure to update the WACM.

NOTE: The WACM software is designed to improve the compatibility between some Apple™ MagSafe charging iPhones, including iPhone 12 and 13 models, and the Ford Qi wireless charging module.

Action: Follow the Service Procedure to repair vehicles that meet all of the following criteria:
• 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E
• Built on or before 17-Apr-2022
• Wireless accessory charger inoperative or poor performance with Apple™ Magsafe charging iPhones including iPhone 12 and 13 models
Service Procedure

1.
Connect a battery charger to the 12-volt battery.

NOTE: To prevent the battery saver mode from activating on the vehicle, make sure the negative cable of the charger is installed on a chassis or engine ground, and not the 12-volt battery negative terminal. Do not have the vehicle plugged into the high voltage battery charger during programming. This can cause incorrect module programming. Make sure only the 12-volt battery charger is installed.

2. Reprogram the WACM using the latest software level of the Ford Diagnostic and Repair System (FDRS).

Aug 1st update - This TSB is still active after the release of SSM 50982. Dealers can still perform the WACM software update under warranty if the criteria are met.

I'm dealing with this issue now with my local dealer and having some trouble. Dropped the car off this AM and they had me come back to pick it up a few hours later and said that it worked when they tested with their phones (samsung and iphone 11)...obviously they didn't read the TSB that I shared with them. They wanted to show me how to use it, which is put the phone on the charge mat :). They printed out the TSB this time and hopefully will run through the text and fix this.

My question is, can FORSCAN do the update or is FDRS required?

Now they are telling me that the TSB doesn't apply to my vehicle because they think the build date is may 2022, when I decode the VIN I get Jan 2022....I wish Ford would chime in here and help me out. Service at the local dealer is unwilling to assist.

Ask the dealer, what production date does the sticker in the drivers door jamb show?

That’s what I asked them to check. I’m on the way back to them now. They are going to check for updates available and I’ll verify the sticker mfr date. I’m planning to discuss with the manager and the sales team if they want to try and charge for this as I just bought this car on Friday.

Send me your VIN mate!

Update:
The sales manager got involved and told them to check for and run any updates...they found and applied an update to the WACM per the bulletin. Hopefully that fixes my super phone heater and charges instead.

Looks like they did, great news. Persistence pays off! I think you'll find your phone still getting hot, but it'll at least keep it charging for the entire drive. My phone was constantly just disconnecting from charging but with the WACM update, it's not disconnected once, even over rough roads and spirited driving!

Yeah the day I picked up the car I had an hour drive to my son's baseball game and the phone got hot and didn't gain any charge. It was on airplay so that probably causes some of the heat as the phone was busy. Hopefully it charges now.

Same here. My iPhone 12 Mini still feels like a furnace, but at least it keeps charging now.

I knew that I would find an answer to my iPhone 13 mini problems here.

When I place it on the "charging" mat, the only thing that happens is that it gets very hot. Almost burn-the-ear hot when held to my ear yesterday after driving home from work. This appears to actively drain the battery, also, as I started my 30 minute drive home with an almost full battery on a very new phone, and it was close to empty when I got home.

I don't want to mess around with the 12V battery, so for now I'll be going the olde school charging cable route, until I have a more compelling reason to take it in for servicing/updating.

Thanks everyone for sharing experience and providing answers.

I can say that after the update the phone still gets warm, but not burning hot like before. And it actually increases % charge, before almost all the energy ended up as heat.

I would advise against using the wireless charger if you have one of the affected iPhones and don’t have the update. You will just cook your phone battery.

Also this is a dealer update, it cannot be fixed OTA.

Update: My iPhone 12 mini was able to charge but still gets hot enough that on a 30 min trip the phone overheats. I was using car play / maps at the time. I've got a new iPhone 13 Max Pro so I'll see if it happens on this phone. Might end up just using cable to charge on trips....
