TLDR: The idea of "winning" the game got me to part with my MME. Sold it to CBUSA for $57K. I paid $51440 sticker for my MME, plus $500 in doc fees, minus $2600 Ford rebate ($2500 for Options, plus another $100 for something else I can't remember what), minus $7500 tax credit which I fully utilized. No sales tax.
Long version:
Been a happy owner of my MME for just over a year. After reading lately about guys selling their MME here for way above original MSRP, I thought I'd try my luck. Here are the offers I received for my mint 3/2021 build Premium standard range AWD with 19K miles and MSRP of $51440. All quotes were received in early August except CBUSA. In no particular order:
CarGuru $54525
Algo $51900
KBB instant cash $54990
Driveway $55772
CarMax $52000 (had to show the car in person)
Vroom $52000
Carvana $48000
Car Buyer USA $57000
Car Buyer USA was a very last second thing. Based on Driveway's offer, I was already on to picking out the replacement and was going to accept it if I find something. Figured I oughta do a bit more homework, I searched here for other car buying services and learned of CBUSA. Truth be told I was a bit hesitant just due to the name ? On their website, their original quote was actually $58937. I was definitely skeptical, so I didn't act on it right away. The next day the curiosity got to me and I decided to proceed. I followed their direction and received a link to a portal to upload photos of the car. Couple hours later I receive and email saying to expect a call with the offer. Another hour later I was offered $57K over the phone.
The vast majority of complaints I read was bait and switch, and I suppose this qualifies. I knew the $58937 offer was probably too good to be true so I set my expectation low. We carried on to chitchat after he made the $57K offer, in the midst of it I was looking for an opportunity to counteroffer. Pretty cool guy, so much so that I forgot all about the counteroffer part and just went straight to telling him to close the deal
.
Since I own the car, it was going to be straight forward. Overnight my title using their Fedex label, then the funds will be wired to me, and then they'll pickup my car. Until he realized that I was "in range" of one of their dropoff locations (Manheim auction), then it changed to I drop off first and then funds will be wired to me. I was most uncomfortable with this part, them having my title and physical possession of the car before I get the money. AFAIK this is also how Vroom works. Friday AM comes, I closed my eyes and dropped off my MME. Took a few more dropoff photos to upload to their portal which completes my part of the deal. About 30 minutes later I received a text from CBUSA stating that they started the process of wiring me the funds.
The next few hours was a bit agonizing as I incessantly refreshed my account and the wire still didn't show. 4:30 comes around I had to ask the CBUSA rep about it before she's gone for the weekend. She assured me that it will hit by 5PM and that I have a nice weekend.. Then 5PM, on the dot, I refreshed once more and it hit ?
Prior to getting the offer from CBUSA, I signed an order for a Genesis GV60 Advanced, but no VIN was available on that order as all incoming Advanced trim cars were spoken for. Soon after that was when I learned of the North American build requirement of the new EV tax credit rule going into effect immediately, and I thought to myself well there goes that idea. Determined to still "win", I thought to myself if I can top the best of those offers, I'd go for the Performance trim since my dealer has couple of available VINs. CBUSA came through and I updated my order to a "binding contract" with a VIN and 5% deposit on 8/13 to grandfather into the previous $7500 tax credit rule.
To be clear, I really enjoyed the MME and had no issues with it apart from being stuck on 1.7.1 for a couple of months (and it cleared itself OTA with no visit to dealer required). I would have had full confidence in keeping the MME long term due to Ford's conservative approach of having a large buffer in the battery pack. As to the HVBJB issue, Ford has an updated part to address it should it become an issue so that wasn't a concern for me. The question mark for me was still with some of the non-OTA updates post warranty. I was definitely going to buy an ESP from Grander Ford if I had kept the car. I still have my 22K points from buying the MME which I could've used to purchase the ESP.
So, did I "win"? The GV60 Performance cost me $70300 with fees. After claiming another $7500 in tax credit, net cost will be $5800 for this trade. I would say yes it's a win. To start, I have four ways to unlock and start the car - the TWO included keyfobs (yes I know Job 1 MME can now get a free second fob), PaaK, a key card, plus facial and finger print recognition. Actually there's a physical key hole hidden under the driver's door handle, so make that five ways to unlock. The GV60 has a proper front and rear tow hook, should the need ever arise lol. I'm just messing around ? Had I not been able to grandfather into the previous EV tax credit rule, I'd still be driving the MME.
I've hung around many other car forums. You guys here really are the best. For the most part, after I move on from a car I don't usually hang around the associated forums, especially the Tesla forums and I was glad to no longer be associated with that crowd. I still plan to be a regular here and I hope I'm welcome.
The final parting shot:
Admittedly the MME is more masculine but I do like the GV60 styling, especially with these 21" wheels on the Performance trim.
The GV60 is a charging beast even on this 150kW station. It comes with 3yrs of unlimited 30-minute sessions.
