I also scratched the liftgate but was purely human error in my case. My wife didn't realize how high the liftgate opened and we were parked such that it opened right into the metal handle on the fully opened garage door. It resulted in one small but deep (can see metal) scratch to back liftgate panel. It's disappointing because the car is still pretty new (about 2 months old).

My question related to this is how people repair the scratch (if at all)? I asked a body shop and they quoted $460. They said they can't just spot treat but would have to completely repaint that whole panel including reattaching the pony emblem. I guess the alternative is touch up paint but, probably b/c I'm still in the honeymoon period with the car, I'm interested in getting a full repair. What do people usually do for small/deep scratches like this?
I had MME 2 weeks and rock unexplainedly bounced off the side of my drivers door as I driving through the neighborhood near a wooded area. It left small 1 inch scratch. I contacted dealer and got some touch up paint. It covered it well.

You can limit the travel of the liftgate easily. See the manual. I have done that to stop it before it hits my garage door. I then need to be a bit careful that I don't clunk my head on the lift gate, of course.

When I'm outside, I simply lift the door the rest of the way manually, which works fairly well (as long as I remember to do so before clunking my head!).
Try that when parked a foot away from the garage door, close the garage door. Then follow the instructions you said. Tell us how that works for you.

We now back the car in. It's beyond the distance of the door and closer to the kitchen door.

That's exactly my scenario. I have about a foot of clearance between the door and the back of my vehicle. I just measured, it's actually 10 inches.

It works well for me. I'll post a photo in a bit of the partially opened lift-gate.

Another solution is to place a protective pad on the lower interior surface of your garage door, where the lift-gate would meet. I'll post a photo of that as well.

Why would you want to open your lift gate when your garage door is closed? Solution: Open your garage door, then open your vehicle's lift gate.

I think you missed the point-accidental opening. I added a strip of heavy duty underpad with tape to cover up the centre hinge which would be the point of contact.

RR,

Ah, sorry. I did miss that. It's been awhile since I read your initial post.

Still, this has to be a pretty unusual event and one that could happen with almost any vehicle. Couldn't it?

For example, if I was to push the 'open hatch' button on my Ford Edge's fob while the vehicle was in the garage and parked, it would hit the garage door. But in all the years I've driven SUVs, I've never had the issue, nor have I heard of others talking about it.

Still, I assume you could change your morning routine to open the garage door first, before opening your back door to place your briefcase on the back seat.

You haven't been following this thread. It's not an accidental push of a button. There's a bug that causes the trunk to open by itself.

I apologize again. It's obviously a mistake to enter into a topic mid-thread.

As an aside, today I went out to my Mach-e without the fob or PAAK and used the keypad to open the driver's door. As the door opened, the Frunk also activated and popped up. This the first time anything like this has happened to me. I now know what some folks say their vehicles are possessed!

<edit>Yep, I missed the point of this thread</edit>

Brand new x5 with 19 miles on it, garage door caused two deep gouges. $700 fix..sigh. Admittedly: I am 100% at fault in this scenario.

no issues after getting this:

Did you happen to touch the 7-8 button after entering your code? That will open the frunk.

This just happened to me for the 3rd time over the course of a year. I have PAAK set up, the car was unlocked, kick to open feature is on, car was parked in the garage, no pets, no rain. It -seems- like the problem might occur the day after a software update - at least this was the case the most recent time. Not sure if OTA is related. I'll be installing padding on the garage door itself since I now have 2 scratches.

Is your liftgate hitting the garage door or the garage frame up top? Try to limit the opening height maybe. My garage is pretty tight, but even if I leave just 12" behind the car that is plenty for the lift gate not to hit in the back. I did have to limit the open height though.
