I’ve had this happen to mine multiple times. Got up again this morning and the trunk was open. Closed garage. Once it hit the door, but only minor damage to the PPF I have on it. Still, horrifically disconcerting. Other than the pre-damage to the front end, which the dealer declined to do anything about, the only other problem I’ve run into. Think I’ll turn off the auto lift and see if that helps.

I understand you can set the limits of travel for the liftgate opening. Is that true? Might keep it from opening high enough to hit something.

You can set the limits. In my case that wouldn't help since the lift gate is only a few inches from my garage door. I've put pads on the (garage) door to cushion the lift gate in case it case the lift gate opens on its own (again). It's only happened once, and I didn't realize the lift gate was resting again the cushion when I opened the garage door. The door bottom cross brace rubbed against the lift gate paint and ever so slightly scratched the surface (it buffed right out), so I added a cushion to that cross brace too.

Yes. After I dented my hatch five days after bringing my car home, I set the hatch open height so it would not hit my garage door. Stupid me should have done it the first day home. Huge lesson learned.

After reading this hatch issue I set the height the first time I put it in the garage.
Jan 4th order and Aug 31 delivery.
Also only having the car a few weeks I'm no expert.
I did find out that our 22 does not have the foot opening option. It was ordered but not delivered. Don't know what if anything Ford with do. The dealer is looking into it.
I also had to clean out the garage a little more so the car could be far enough forward the garage door and rear hatch couldn't meet.

thanks for sharing your experience it has saved me and others from the same.

It is surprising you were able to order it when it was well known to be removed. In any case, I turned mine off because that is how my hatch was damaged the first time, and because it does not work reliably with PaaK.

It is so stupid standing there, kicking all over under the bumper and nothing happens. The entire purpose for having kick to open is defeated when I have to press the hatch button to get it to open anyway.

I believe it works fairly reliably if you carry a fob, but I don't. Maybe I can sell you the hardware from my car and you dealer can put it in your car? 😂

Shut off hands-free liftgate if you park closer than 18" to your garage door. Putting a large piece of metal closer than 18" to the sensor can fool it and a gust of wind pushing on your garage door could trigger it.

I don't think the engineers anticipated y'all parking so close to metal objects.

I've never had a false activation but I park 22" from my garage door.

You can enable it: DIY How To: Add Hands-free liftgate back to 2022 Mach-E

The dealer WILL NOT do this for you, DIY only.

I have, twice.
Is this a PAAK thing? I've never set PAAK up...I just use the fob. Whenever I walk away from my Mach-E, it locks itself, preventing inadvertent hatch openings.

I do use PAAK, but the car was confirmed locked both times it happened. I was probably within Bluetooth range when I happened, so a faulty kick sensor could have caused it.

Just want to report that this situation happened AGAIN just a few days ago. This situation has nothing to do with the height of the rear door. The problem we have experienced twice is that the rear hatch opens by itself when it's inside the garage, and the door ends up hitting up against the closed garage door and scraping against the door hardware (hinges). We had pulled into the garage, closed the garage door, and began walking into the house. The car was shut off, the iphone was in the "off/dark" sleep mode, and the key fob was inside the house. My wife and I heard the noise of the rear/hatch door opening, and watched as it once again struck the back of the closed garage door. No animals were present, no people were within 20' of the car, and nothing had been done to activate the rear hatch ! Unbelievable. Something is triggering it, and it's only happened twice in the year of ownership, but that's TWICE TWO OFTEN ! It scrapes the paint on the otherwise pristine rear door, due to no fault of our own. So intermittent and impossible to trigger, so have no idea how to get a repair technician to troubleshoot or diagnose this issue ! Ford...do you have an answer/solution?????

@DevSecOps had done a pretty deep dive into diagnosing this. I am not sure if he ever got to a root cause.

I had this happen last night. My cameras confirm that the trunk opened itself at 10pm resulting in damage this morning when I opened the garage door. Extremely frustrating.

Hello! Could you send over a DM with your VIN and Ford dealer info? I can take a look into your trunk concern on my end.
