Hi!

I have an early 21 and seem to get no updates. I have a ‘frunk’ warning light every time I start and the auto update slider is greyed out. The dealer doesn’t know what to do. Can you check what is open and give me some info to wave at the techs at the dealer? Would be awesome!

There is a lot to unpack here......

Your service tech has been struggling with your APIM (Sync) module for a loooong time. He/she has tried the "Module Update Repair" procedure over and over without any success. They have tried to update your APIM on many occasions without success and run "Config' routines and everything they can think of.

It's time for them to 1) request Ford Engineering support, and/or 2) order a new APIM and when it gets in do all the updates to bring you current.

This will also likely result in their having to update your GWM (gateway) several times as well.

You currently have the same condition that many 21J1 cars had were they were "stuck" after OTA 1.7.1. Exactly the same issue.

As for your "Frunk Maintence Service Required" error there is a TSB that covers that (attached), but the real problem is that your BCM was updated (correctly) but the GFM (frunk module) software that was supposed to match with that BCM update was never updated. And it's possible it was never offered to your car at all (Ford server problem?).

What that means is just like this poster's car, your car has a mismatch between the BCM software and the GFM software.

You have the correct BCM software revision for your car ("-ACR") but you have an out of date software revision for the GFM ("-AE") that is supposed to be "-BE" to match your BCM's software version.

Your tech can follow the TSB...but if it says to update the software and the software is not showing up as available for your VIN then they only thing to try is a "PMI" procedure that erases the current software and re-downloads the (hopefully) correct version and updates the module with that.

Here's the one and only software update you have showing today, but your tech(s) haven't been successful in applying it so far. They need to ask for help from engineering or order you a new APIM. Or both.

You do have a GWM update in the list but that's it. Everything else seems to be at level. I believe this is the GWM update that would be OTA 4.2.1 equivalent if that helps.

Wow that is insightful!
Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to check this; I’ll check tomorrow with my dealer/tech and give them this information. Will let you know what they’ll say.
So happy you did this for me!

So they left you with one update still available, the gateway module:
WF0TR3SU7MMA16151-3-Mar-23.png

But the real question is why?
After doing several other updates the tech started to do the gateway and before the thumb drive could even be recognised by the car (if it was ever inserted into the car at all) the tech answered "No" to the question in FDRS as to whether the update was successful. He just bailed out.

Check the timestamps on his actions and you'll see what I mean:
WF0TR3SU7MMA16151-3-Mar-23Work.png

It can take 5 or more minutes for the USB drive to be recognized by the car and then another 5 or so for the update to be applied. After which the car is shutoff for 10 minutes with the driver's door left ajar and then restarted to complete the update sequence. Yer man just bailed out completely.
@Mike G, to update ..I spoke with the dealer this morning and he has assured me ALL available updates were completed on Friday evening.. unless it was done it Friday evening after 5:00pm ?‍♂

Did all my updates this weekend. Let's see if anything new shows up :)
It's usually later in the week...nothing so far.

Went to the dealer today with this printed out and talked to my very friendly Ford tech: he was amazed that ‘somebody’ found this out ? and tried the update. Failed. And ordered a new APIM. Which sadly is on back order now.
So, waiting again.

thanks again for the help and info!

Is there anything you can see about this?

Thanks Mike G! Is there a preferred order of operations for these?

Gateway first, PCM next and that will chain the rest of the powertrain updates in sequence and the rest can be done in any order.

If you see a GWM, or APIM, or TCU ever show up right after a network scan (or after updating another module) ...do whichever one of those that showed up before doing anything else.
