Personally, I think it's utterly stupid that most manufacturers put the charge port beside the driver door - halfway down the car. Why? Well - shorter cable run to the battery I suppose, but that's just plain dumb.

Why not put it at the furthest edge of the car -in the rear where a gas tank filler would normally be? This way, the DC cabling can be shorter and more efficient.
@ChasingCoral offered a rationale for charger port locations a while back.

while the tesla connector is nice. i will not buy a car that can only charge on a tesla network. I bought this car to get away from tesla and with mass adoption pushing towards the clunky CCS connector I rather take the option with more availability in the future.

Why would Ford be limited to only use the Tesla network? Teslas aren’t.

DC doesn’t use an onboard charger.
You know, now that you mention it, I do remember that now.

The rest of the post stands.

Seriously do not see Ford having J1772, CCS, and NACS hardware on their vehicles.

If Ford doesn't include both CSS and the Tesla connector on future cars, not only am I giving up on Ford, but also EVs in general. I don't want to become what CHAdeMO is in North America right now, which is bullshit because everyone had assumed CCS would be the one prevalent standard in NA. I wouldn't have bought the MME if I wasn't 100% sure of its longevity vis-a-vis the charge port.

And I say this as someone who's 100% into EVs and electrification of personal transport.
So you're giving up on an entire domestic brand because you might need to use a $150 adapter for a few years on the occasion that you'd need to DCFC?

Sounds reasonable.

I see this as a good move for all of us. Now, we have a network of DCFC that will double in a year, plus it sends a message to EA that they need to get their act together.

It does make me wonder if their stock will crater here soon and someone swoop in and buy them. Imagine how nice it would be to have 2 reliable, available charging networks instead of the goat rodeo that EA has become.

True. I was focused on the Magic Dock part but yes, there's still the same other requirements too.
It will be tied to your Ford Pass app and the Blue Oval network. Now, can the Ford software people do the integration.....experience says not so much.

Not really. It would have to be in the left rear very close to the corner of the vehicle.

There's a good reason not to place chargers on the nose (think Leaf) or corner. Those are where most accidents happen and a damaged port would drive up repair costs.

Besides, rear charger ports are a total non-starter on trucks or other vehicles that are likely to tow a trailer.
Sure it would. The rear quarter panel charge port is closer to the rear bumper, same corner as Tesla. Still protected from accidents.

Tesla's charging network is orders of magnitude better than CCS in every way. I suppose you could just choose to not use it. Get a CCS adapter and continue to use the CCS "network". Sounds like a terrible idea though. We didn't realize how much better the SC network was until we experience it for ourselves. Hopefully Ford will get things fully integrated into the vehicles infotainment system. It's a thing of beauty! Hope you find it helpful one day. :)
But you have to deal with crap like this.

In my last 7 years of EV driving, I’ve never had to wait at a DCFC.

This has nothing to do with “just using an adapter”. This has implications for the EV industry as a whole, from DCFC operators to car manufacturers. I’m voting with my wallet because this isn’t a good move to unite the DCFC story in NA.

I’d imagine along with moving away from CCS, Ford will move the charge port to the rear driver side, like Tesla has. Port location will also end up being as proprietary as charger connection. That alone opens up older superchargers to Ford & on Tesla’s side eliminates a non Tesla taking up 2 spots.

It also means less retrofitting on Teslas end & sets a precedent that Tesla can meet the federal requirement in making all non Tesla’s able to charge - if they follow the model Ford did.
