Yesterday my windshield was hit by a rock from a dump truck on the highway. I was driving in the middle lane when he pulled over in front of me and launched the rock.

I have dashcam video of the rock flying off the dump truck and the loud whack when it hit my windshield. Plus the dashcam got his license plate, company name, truck number, etc...

The chip left in my windshield is more of a deep pitting. Doesn't look to have any sharp crack lines and it's not very big.

Does anyone have experience with this kind of chip? Will it grow into a crack that spreads? It seems like something that can be repaired, but I don't want to let the company off the hook if it will later turn into a crack. Thanks in advance.

Laws vary by state. In some, loads such as rock must be tarped and if they’re not, they could be liable. Turn it into your insurance and they’ll go after the recovery, if it’s possible (and it’s worth their time).

I agree with the General, that should be repairable.

Dump truck is responsible. Go after them.

Don’t you have windscreen cover in US where repairs are done for free? Don’t appear cracked, even if it is it is still repairable as end of cracks can be drilled & filled if it’s not in line of driver’s sight - A-zone in UK - and is not above a certain size.

Pursuing the truck company yourself will probably take a whole load of time & trouble and become all consuming at times.

My view - life’s too short, annoying though it is and the efforts of satisfying a need to seek retribution far outweighs just dealing with the issue and moving on to carry on enjoying life, and of course the ‘Stang ?

Could be worse, here’s my little friend……..

Thanks for all the advice. I'm going to call the truck company on Monday and see what they say. I'll also contact my insurance. The chip isn't very big and isn't in line of sight (almost dead center of windshield). As long as it doesn't turn into a crack, it'll be easy to ignore.

Crazy how loud it was inside the car vs how small the damage turned out to be.

Don’t ignore it. It will crack and expand, eventually.

It depends on what kind of insurance you choose to buy. Mine, for example, will repair the glass no charge, but I have to pay a deductible if it must be replaced. Some choose no-deductible glass coverage which has a higher premium. Exactly what type of coverage is available can vary by state.

This ^^^. Many policies / states give free glass repair (not replacement).

My zero deductible glass policy costs me $83.20 for the Mach-E and $78.40 for the Lightning ($25.60 for the 2013 F-150).

It covers all safety glass, which is basically all glass on the vehicle including sunroof / moonroof.

Just call your insurance, get an appt at a local place and get it repaired. Takes an hour out of your life, it’s inevitable and won’t be your last. The dump truck company will laugh you off the phone.

I assumed the fight with the dump truck company won't be easy. Even with the clear dashcam proof. It's not that big of a deal if it doesn't eventually crack out. I guess I'll see what an auto glass place says first and then determine if I should contact insurance.

Spend $10 on Amazon and 10 minutes using a window repair kit. It's literally a couple drops of repair solution, followed by a cure sheet, leave it in the sun, scrape away the excess, done.

Calling the truck company, your insurance and driving it somewhere to get it repaired will waste far more time and money than just doing it yourself.

With my insurance, I go online, submit the info, and Safelite comes to my house (or work) and does the repair. I get a guarantee that the flaw won’t propagate for x number of days, 30, 60, 90….I don’t remember how many. I do a lot of DYI, but fixing windshields isn’t one of them. If I had to take the car someplace and wait to have it done, I might reconsider.

I had a crack similar to this one showing by the 0P. My crack was on the passenger side. I had it repaired and the repair did not make it look much better. Two months later on the state required annual inspection, it failed to pass, and I had to replace it. Fortunately, at the same time I was doing the glass recall and Ford paid the labor and I paid for the windshield and then turned it into insurance. I have full glass coverage and insurance paid the price for the new windshield.

I usually patches small chips by myself. I would spend couple minutes looking up regulations on the DMV or DPS websites and try to find a contact email. Then email the videos of the possible violation. If those people want to fine the trucking company or stop by trucking company location and inspect their facility, that would be worth my time.
