Interesting interview with Jim Farley.
In this clip, he explains he tested BlueCruise 1.3 and 1.4

1.3 needs to reach more of us first.

1.3 hasn’t reached ANYONE (outside of Ford) yet. (I may be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure currently shipping vehicles come with 1.2).

I don't know. But if we think about next steps.... I would think BC 1.4 would do automated lane changes without driver input (not hitting the turn signal stalk).
It currently already suggests changes, and Supercruise performs the changes already. So I would say that’s a great bet.

Hopefully BC would follow navigation if a destination is set as well!
This would be great. If it could do auto lane changes, the next logical step IMO would be to do interstate-to-interstate exits, which are basically just a lane change plus a curve, and we already know BC 1.2/1.3 can slow for curves. That would get you pretty much full hands-free navigation on highways, and at that point you’re on to stop light recognition (for general exits) and city streets, which I’m not even sure Ford wants to do.

I’d be shocked if BC - with current hardware - is enhanced to:
  • do automatic lane changes
  • otherwise steer the car (such as onto an off-ramp) based upon navigation
I’m guessing it may just be further loosening of the hands-on constraints on curves, better performance at on-and off-ramps, and other relatively minor enhancements.

I’d love to see a more robust graphical depiction on the IPC of objects around the car, a la Tesla, but I’m not sure Ford has the software chops for that.

I’m not sure what that means since BC only works on certified, limited access, divided highways. It wouldn’t do an exit, for example.

You may want to take a look at the 2024 ICE Mustang displays ?

I agree, I think there may be some hardware limitations for navigation. I think the automatic lane change could happen though. It wouldn't be too much of an add since it can do the lane change itself already. (1.2+) It just needs human permission first currently.

The details in the IPC though would need much more hardware to do. Right now it only only there are objects around the sides of the vehicle and not really what the objects are. So it would need more cameras like Teslas have to really get it right.
