Mach-E on order
Country flag
This story started two weeks ago, somewhere in Europe (Spain to be more precise):

After checking out different EV's (Tesla, Audi, Volvo, Toyota), my wife and I finally decided on the Mach-E. We both loved the design, its features and were nicely surprised by its build quality.

When we did the test drive at the dealership, they told us the expected delivery date was end November / beginning of December.
The day of the signing of the contract (just 5 days later) in all of a sudden a new delivery date popped up: January 10th.
We were told this was based on a misunderstanding between the salesperson and his boss, the beginning of December was never an option.

Quite disappointed by this, they told us this date is just an estimation and usually gets updated a few days after placing the order. With that in mind they offered us to place the order without any upfront payment until a week after, with the option to cancel it without any risk should the date remain unchanged.

A week passed and the date didn't change. Nonetheless, since we both liked the car so much, we decided to go for it. We wire transferred the upfront payment and that's that.

Until a week later, yesterday, we got a call that the delivery date was updated.
However, no reason for cheering, it was actually delayed till February 24th!! We went from end November/beginning December when we first tried the car to February 24th two weeks later. Say what?! The explanation that we got was that the car we reserved (which was already in Europe: Anterp, Belgium) was probably assigned to another dealership as we didn't do the upfront payment (they offered that...). As no more models with our configuration are in stock in Europe, the next available one has to be shipped from Mexico.

Now we are seriously thinking of cancelling the order and going for our second option: the Tesla model Y.
Currently the model Y has a discount on stock models of 5000 euros, lowering the price to 41.000 euros, delivered in 3 weeks, as opposed to the Mach-E which goes for 49.000 euros (select trim, tech pack, sun roof and carbonized grey), to be delivered February 24th.

I know this is not the best place to ask, but what would you guys do?

It's really up to you. I ordered my car in June 2021, and didn't take delivery until March 2022. I did have the option of making changes, based on 2022 upgrades, before assembly, so that actually worked out better.

IMHO there is nothing about any tesla that is worth bothering with. So switching from a far superior product to a tesla muskmobile would not even be a consideration.

I had a Tesla MY AWD and traded it in for a BMW i4 40eDrive this last spring. Google "phantom breaking". We've been happy with the MME and the i4.

I’d go with the MY. It’s a more refined EV and will be much cheaper.

I wouldn't buy a current MY, I'd wait for the refreshed model. I prefer the MME to the current MY, which is why I own one.

I recommend the Mach E over the Tesla Y. I test drove them both before I decided... went with the Mach E after the test drives.

Definitely your choice. My car's slot was on reservation for over a year before I was even able to place an order for it. After that, I waited for the order to be fulfilled. The wait was not fun, but it is what it is. ?‍♂?

I can offer a unique perspective since my wife and I bought her a 22 Mach E GT and I drive a 2018 Tesla Model 3 Perf.

My wife fell in love with the look of the Mach E and I will freely admit that the Mach E is a better looking car than the Model 3 or Model Y. I am curious to see the revamped Model 3 and Model Y in person, when they are available here. But for now, the MME is a much better looking car.

The fit and finish of the MME is about 10% better than the fit and finish of my Tesla. And the rear visibility of the MME is far superior than the rear visibility of the Model Y. Take each for a test drive and pay attention to your view through the rear view mirror. You will see what I mean.

But here are the reasons why I personally still prefer my Tesla:

While the fit and finish of the MME is better than the Tesla, the technology of the Tesla is 30-40% better than the MME tech. With my Telsa, the car, the Telsa app, and the Superchargers are integrated nearly flawlessly. Not so with the Ford app and most DC fast charging. Maybe this will improve in 2024 once MME owners gain access to some of the Tesla Superchargers.

If I want to go on a road trip, I would have no problem putting the destination address in my Tesla's navigation and completely trusting it to get me to my destination. I would never trust my wife's MME to do the same.

Even though Tesla Superchargers are opening up to MME's in 2024, remember that not all Superchargers will be open. Version 2 Superchargers are not capable of providing power to non-Teslas. So if you get a Tesla, you will still have access to a greater number of Superchargers in 2024.

You sound like my neighbor, he wanted a Mustang but didn’t want to wait and got the Y. It’s got great seats and a great stereo, similar to Ford but a little better. I’d wait for the Mustang, tesla is great but I like everything about the mustang more. Especially the design/style. Mustsng is just a great looking car. With a muscle car feel but then inside it’s an SUV. The driver and main screens, layout of the interior controls, and tactical buttons in the Mustang are perfect for me. Tesla is a little too minimalistic for my preference. No Apple CarPlay in the Tesla.

If you're a technophile go with the Y. If you like to road trip go with the Y. If you're into paying more for fit and finish and you're aware that the MMEs resale values are crap, then go with the MME. IMO the MME also looks better.

You'll be severely disappointed in the MachEs technology, OTAs and digital refinement if that's what you enjoy.

Obviously a personal choice. Alas, I suggest, as others, that you merely test drive both, and then order the car of your choice...

That's exactly one of the reasons why the MME was more compelling. However, with the way longer delivery date on the MME, and the price reduction on stock MY (€41.000 instead of €46.000), doubt slips in...

Thanks Joe for your feedback. All really good points. You're right about the rear view mirror, I tried the MY before the MME and immediately noticed the difference. Also like the fact that the MME has BLISS in the rear mirrors (looking at the screen for rear cameras just isn't practical).

I personally think the revamped model 3 is the perfect bargain. Price is good, and one would expect they perfectionized it to be a better car than the previous model. Nonetheless, we currently have a sedan, and my wife doesn't fancy another one. You know...happy wife happy life. Which leaves us with the MY, yet the revamped one is yet to be seen.

The supercharger network isn't that much of a problem for us. We travel, but not that often. Also, over here in Europe Tesla's network has already been opened up since 2021. From what I can tell, in Spain about 25% of the chargers have already been adapted.

Being in IT I'm definitely a technophile. I'm currently driving a 15 year old VW Passat with no infotainment at all, no special bells and whistles, so this will already be a giant leap for me. Not sure whether I will be bothered that much by things lacking in the MME.

From your perspective, apart from OTAs, what could be improved on a technological level in the MME, compared to a Tesla?

Regarding the resale value, I would expect Tesla's resale price to be low too, given the fact that they are so abundant?

Going from an ICEV to either BEV you are going to be much happier ?.

BEV shoppers are in a bit of a pickle right now with the changes coming in 2024 and 2025. Though in Europe, not so much the DCFC infrastructure but mostly the slew of new models across all brands.

Still, today, BEVs are already very good and completely practical for a larger number of people. I'm not sure I'd say fear of missing out (FOMO) on the next best thing is a reason to wait.

As for MY vs MME. Coworker has a MY PE. I like the look (appearance is a preference and not a fact). I'm envious of her software, cool back up noise and sentry mode. But the back seat is not at all comfortable (to me).

MME software is still janky but has actually been less so. I use Android Auto and my phone has received a few updates. The perceived improvement is likely on Google's part as Ford has not pushed out a UI update in too long. At the end of the day, it's your money and your choice. Please post what you end up with. I'm always curios about which BEVs people pick (so long as they go electric ?).
