Yes. Partly because it is California, partly because they are making up for lost gas taxes. Keep in mind that the lost gas tax part of the registration is less than $150. Part of the registration fee is based on what someone bought the car for new. They also recently they added a "fair market value" component that is between $75 and $150. Other fees are tacked on for transportation improvement, smog abatement, reducing emissions. I pay an extra $75 or so because of a personalized plate.

Thanks. Doesn't CA do something similar for property taxes on houses (being based on the original purchase price)?

I haven't renewed the Mach-E yet but typically pay about $125/yr in NY for an organizational (alumni association) AND personalized plate. NY doesn't do a gas tax supplement though (don't see why they wouldn't though, makes a ton of sense).
