Wow!

I knew it was coming but it’s shocking when you see it…

What are you getting hit with?
Holy Crap! Don't you guys have any type of Mass Transit? I was offended that PA has added a $5 surcharge, bringing a two year renewal up to $100!

I guess I should also say that my ’72 Blazer’s total fees went up something like $35.00 from 2022 to 2023. I wonder if it’s going to go up again? ??
The nice thing about Mississippi is if you have a 25-year-old car you buy the tag once and you keep it until you get rid of the car. You don’t have to pay anymore and it’s only $60 for that tag.

Well, they got rid of the sticker, but not the inspection (although new cars are exempt from safety inspection for first 3 years). Several counties require emissions check as well (via OBD connection to check for trouble codes) at additional cost. Safety inspection is around $15, full inspection is around $30. You can't renew registration if you haven't gotten the inspection.
I usually sold my car every two years that’s why I never saw it anymore and in our county they did not do the emissions. It was only check your tinted windows and everything else 30 bucks Johnston county

I guess cause I’ve been in Mississippi for the last three years. I might’ve forgotten that I had to run back there once a year, but I swear the last few years I was living up there I had not gone back to the inspections station, and I was still registering my car every year I could be wrong.

In Florida it’s $225 for a new registration, and then 37.50 a year or 75 for two years.

My registration slip says the fee total was $788 back in November. No clue as to the breakdown since I have to pay the entire amount regardless in order to get the new sticker. ?‍♂?
Before you pay, you can go on the DMV's website to get a break down of the fees.

I loved it back in the 60s when we lived in Illinois. We used to drive to Kenosha Wisconsin where the rambler factory was and my dad would sit there and order which one he wanted and paid his $1300 for a brand new car. We watched it being built they took it out for about a 15 mile test ride and hand you the keys lol not anymore. Can you even go inside a a plant without a security clearance?
Yes, in Stuttgart. It was an experience to say the least.

Yeah, but only before. I paid back in October, so they have no information for me other than the registration is valid. ?‍♂?

Yeah, I just paid mine and wanted to go back and see what the breakdown is, but was denied just like you. Just something to remember to do in 11.5 months. I don't think the paper renewal has the breakdown.

The paper one has enough of a breakdown to say which part can be deducted on your taxes.

It is worth mentioning that in some of these states you can write these registration fees off on your federal taxes.

WI is sadly not one of those states.

The key word would be "Yet". Sooner or later they will add it.

Texas recently started charging an EV registration fee. $400 for first year, $200 for yearly renewal after.

I imagine most other states will start to add a similar EV registration fee as more EV's are hitting the roads in those states. They need to recoup the "Gas Tax" some how to pay for road maintenance.
Recouping “gas taxes” is a a total trick by the government.

We pay taxes on our fuel as well. Plenty of taxes on electricity.

Yes, I know those aren’t currently going directly to roads, but they do go to the government. It’s up to them to fix that issue, not me.

But if your state increases registration fees for “gas tax,” you are getting double taxed.

Are they going to increase fees on ICE owners to make up for the fact they use less electricity and pay less “electric taxes?”

See how ridiculous that sounds?

the tax I pay on electricity is miniscule compared to the tax for gas. And break out the relatively tiny amount of electricity I use in a month even more miniscule (I think my rough estimate, maybe 10% or less of my monthly electricity goes to charging my car) Having an EV fee (which in most states is less than $200) seems like the easiest way to deal with the EVs not using gas, hence not paying gas tax for road maintenance while using these roads. Ideally, they could base the EV fee on miles each driver does, but think the complexities of doing that might be self defeating.
