Hey forum members -

Grateful for any help diagnosing 21 MME4 Premium VIN - 3FMTK3SS6MMA06567 . Seems like HVBJB, charged overnight outside in cold, got in this morning and got warning lights as below, car would not shift into drive.

After the first Stop Safely now and waiting 20 minutes, it started to run again. Drove 1/2 mile and parked leaving the car On but accessories off while I got coffee. Came back and it was still running. Drove another half mile and it died again showing Stop Safely now warning. I then got it towed to dealer who can't look at ir for at least two weeks.
My local Ford dealer finally was able to look at my car (2022 AWD/Premium/Extended manufactured 10/22) and said they will need to drop down the entire high voltage battery and replace the "top cell." I assume they mean one of the modules. And it will take 2-3 weeks if all goes well which means I will be without my cat for over a month.

I never understood why people think OTAs are not downloaded over WiFi. I've seen my own network show that the larger ones do download on WiFi. In the first 2 years of my Job 1 car, I would see the big download occur, hopped immediately in my car, and the OTA went to work. Well before the public charging or other apps that would even begin to reach large file sizes.

That said…

I think there's an validation step that only uses the cell network in order to initiate, hence the "doesn't work on WiFi" conclusion. The bulk of the download occurs on best Internet connection available, but initiation of the OTA seems to require with a working cell connection. So even with a great WiFi connection, bad cell reception prevents the start of an OTA.

Do I know 100%? No. But the evidence on my Job 1 car doesn't support the other way around. ??‍♂
So in my case, I look at the time stamps of when the OTA files are downloading, and they happen while I'm driving. So that's how I know it's not using WiFi.

I also think you're right about the cell network initialization, that's always required. But if the car happens to see a good WiFi connection when it wants to start downloading files, then it might choose to switch to that instead for certain larger OTAs.

But I think the point is cellular is always required, WiFi is optional for OTAs. They cannot happen off WiFi exclusively.

I'm guessing the codes hadn't been reported to the mothership yet when you called, but the codes are below. None of the codes reference a TSB or an SSM to give a clue as to what caused them or what the fix entails if it were an issue that required attention. Sometimes, a glitch int he matrix (so to speak) causes weird isolated incidents like this. This will be something that would have to happen again before I would say a dealer visit is warranted.

Have you started/driven the car again since it happened? Your car seemed very happy before today and has not recorded any codes in the past 60 days until today, so I hope it's just a weird glitch. If you have FORScan, I'd pull the codes to see if it is reporting anything after whatever happened happened.

Isn’t there a flag for "Wi-Fi availability" in PTS for each update package?
And that flag has only been enabled for a couple of updates in the past?
It's actually indicating if Wi-Fi is required for that particular OTA. And 99% of the time it's marked "No".

It doesn't hurt to have WiFI connected when at home or regularly trusted spots as it won't prevent the download from happening. It may or may not happen on WiFi, but it's not an inhibitor. Worse case it's all cell download. Best case it downloads faster on WiFi and ready quicker.

No updates in months. Help a brother out, please.

You have the latest version of Sync for a 2021 model according to this.

Here's the list of available software showing for your VIN in FDRS:

You really have no DTCs of any significance (nothing permanent).

About the only thing you're missing that might be useful are cruise control updates (CMR, IPMA, PSCM). No idea when they will be sent as OTAs for your car.

This VIN has no available updates showing in FDRS...meaning it's as up-to-date as you can get. The significance of that is that it's probably one out of thousands of MMEs in the UK that is actually current with all updates. A unicorn, in other words. If you plan on purchasing this car make sure you go into the Sync menu and do a "Factory Reset" so that the previous owner's settings will be removed from Sync and you'll be able to set the car up using FordPass under your account. The car will then start reporting it's health status to the cloud...it's not doing that now because the old owner's settings are still there.

Thank you! its definitely on the top of my list. From what I can see the colour is listed as Dark Micastone, which I cant find any other listings for. Is this a discontinued colour?

Dark micastone is not a Ford colour. At least not in any materials I've got access to.

Here's the detail for that VIN:

Ford and Lincoln share a colour palette and the name of a particular shade will be different depending on what brand the paint is on. In this case, the Ford name for the colour of that car was marketed as Dark Matter. The Ford colours are normally listed ahead of the Lincoln named version in FDRS.
