Last week I ordered the @A2ZEV J1772 extension cord to accommodate 2 EVs in the garage.

Used my discount coupon for total price of $137.70 total with free shipping.

Today, UPS notifies me that I owe $182.16 in customs/duties.

Is this correct or a scam email ?

Looks like a scam, but with all the confusion, it’s not clear.

I would call UPS using the number on their website (not with the link or phone number provided in the phishing message) and ask them for further information.

You should ask A2Z... First I am seeing anything like this. Call them and get the right answer today.

i know everyone is saying scam but they knew your name (presumably it's correct) and they knew the product you bought. i was going to ask you for the email address it came from but based on these 2 points i'm almost certain it is a real UPS email address without having seen it

that said, it makes no sense to me they would be charging you for the whole product plus tariff on delivery, so i agree you need to talk to A2Z

Get the headers off of the email tat you were sent. Compare with known scam and UPS originating IP addresses. That will definitively tell you if it's a scam. Also as @SpaceEVDriver said, call the number for UPS that's in the phone book and ask. Likely, it is a scam. 🤔🐩

I'm with this one - scam wouldn't likely use your full name, or your product. They're also usually much more urgent in pressuring you into paying and not "pay now or pay the driver when he comes"

As for the tariffs being higher than the original price - it's likely you're being hit with pass-through tariffs (punitive rates for products from high rate countries shipped through low rate countries - in this case Canadian based A2Z manufactured and imported it from China to their warehouse in CA)

Very likely not a scam but a screw up nonetheless.

Trump Tax (Tariff) of 35% on Canadian imports started August 1. Hypothetically you as the importer owe the tariff, not A2Z. It does sound like UPS is charging for the entire amount, not just the added tariff.

Just double checked my UPS app and it's real!

Called A2Z and no one picked up.

Calling UPS to confirm.

The same thing happened to my brother when he ordered prototype parts fabricated in China. He called UPS and they said it will take a couple weeks to get to his case - they must be inundated.

That said, $182 on top of $137 seems high (his was about 1/3 the total cost of his part). @4sallypat, you mentioned you used a discount code - what was the undiscounted price? I'm pretty sure the tariff would be based on that.

Oh, and it is a scam, just not one involving UPS or A2Z. 😉

Yup, probably the tariff (35%) plus the typical sky-high UPS brokerage fees.
Yup.

When I lived in Canada, to get anything from the US via UPS meant a minimum of $50 brokerage fee.

With de minimis gone, these brokerage fees will be the norm.

90 minutes on the phone (mostly on hold).
3 UPS reps (US, International, Brokerage).

Brokerage rep broke down customs/duties/fees:

$156.16 Duty
$26.00 Brokerage fee

I think I will refuse the package.

Your thoughts ?
