Our road just got newly paved. We have a fair amount of walkers who use the road, which is great. A new issue cropped up. The road is so nice and smooth, and the Mach-e is so quiet, no one can hear it coming, it is very hard to get walkers attention, and passing them every slow slowly freaks them out. I do wish it made a noise a bit like the Toyota RAV4 when going very slowly so people could hear it.

It does. It's a federal requirement.

Turn the A/C on, they'll hear you coming a mile away

... my neighborhood has beautiful sidewalks... yet people walk in the road.
That happens in my neighborhood for two reasons.

1. The sidewalks are not quite wide enough for two to walk side by side.

2. The roots of the trees beside the sidewalks have lifted the sidewalk in so many places that the road is actually a safer place to be from a tripping perspective.

And remove that element of surprise??!! No way!!! That double or triple take as you glide silently by is priceless.

Someone in a Mach-E or other silent EV should slowly drive next to a person that’s walking, without the person noticing you, slowly roll down your passenger window and yell “Boo”! I bet the person would love that ?.

Roll down your windows and crank your music to 11?

It it called the Pedestrian Alert System. It makes a noise at low speeds. If you roll down your window, you should clearly hear it making a noise, then stopping the noise at 30kph (18.7 miles an hour).

If you're exceeding that speed, you have two options:

1) Slow down to the speed and generate the noise.

2) Open your window, and as you approach the walkers yell out "GET THE HELL OUT OF MY WAY". ?

You could also just yell out "vroom, vroom" as you go down the road.

it does make a sound, it is very subtle. I came from a RAV4 and we called it the witching sound because it sounded like something howling. The Mach-e’s pitch is more of a hum than a warning. I like the idea of yelling vrooooo
Vroooom though ?

The sound is very, very soft. I’ve adjusted my driving when I’m near people who aren’t looking to compensate.

Not sure what to make of this. At low speeds the pedestrian alert is clearly audible. Above the speed where the pedestrian alert shuts off, the MME (as do all cars) generates enough road noise from the tires to be heard by pedestrians. So unless they're completely distracted or wearing headphones, I don't see how they don't hear the car coming.

Under 25mph the damn thing sounds like an oversized Roomba, my dogs can hear it and start barking when the wife is over a block and a half away.
