Wait, what, I thought the MME was basically maintenance free, at least that’s what many on this forum say? ? Should not cost more than a couple hundred bucks! ?

This is a very interesting situation. The reason EVs were never commercially developed until Teslas came around over a decade ago, wasn't because the major automotive manufacturers couldn't design an EV that could rival or even surpass (as we're seeing) an ICE vehicle, it's because of the 800-pound gorilla in the room - service centers. I'm sure at many points over the last few decades, bean counters and R&D engineers all came up with the same figures and presented them to the auto executives - bye-bye service centers. Everybody here is commenting on how the 10K multiples service for the Mach E should cost about $65 and how relative maintenance free these cars are. Can you imagine if every car on a dealer lot was an EV, and all the service center charged per car coming in for service was 65 bucks? They might as well out-source the maintenance/repairs and just keep a couple of tables with laptops on them for software updates.

Not saying what this dealership did was right. It's pretty shady. But I'm actually not surprised at all. I could be 100% wrong here (and I am frequently), but I think this was the first shot across the bow from a dealership trying to find a way to recoup the loss of massive amounts of money in maintenance and repair costs from their cash cow profit center.

Switch over to having body shops on site instead of out sourcing that like many do….never going to be a lack of vehicles getting in wrecks.

When I put a doink on my front driver-side fender, I took it in to the dealership service center and they referred me to a bodyshop. They don't do that work now, but I'm sure that's something they may have no choice but to start doing.

spot on analysis, dealerships would go belly up if Ford had the Tesla direct to consumer approach. Which I believe for and others are locked into the dealership model by law

Servicing is maintenance.
Maintenance is a subset part of Servicing. The broader scope of "Servicing" is making sure everything that needs worked on or checked, is done or "maintained".

The Dealership in the OP concern is that the "service" that was provided was not part of the Maintenance that was actually needed (in most opinions on this thread).

So in conclusion, the "service" was bad whereas the maintenance was not needed in this case.

The "cost" to maintain was obscured by the poor advise of the person that was providing the Service.

HERE'S WHAT HAPPENS AT YOUR 30,000 MILES CHECKUP
  • Inspect the wheels and related components for abnormal noise, wear, looseness or drag.
  • Inspect cooling system level and strength
  • Inspect tires and check tire pressures.
  • Inspect steering linkage, ball joints, suspension, tie-rod ends, drive shaft and U-joints. Lubricate if equipped with grease fittings.
  • Inspect brake pads, shoes, rotors, drums, brake linings, hoses and parking brake.
  • Perform multi-point inspection.
  • Inspect half-shaft boots.
  • Rotate the tires, inspect tire wear and measure tread depth.
dealer ripoff!
If they actually do a hands- on inspection of all listed items & a rotation….., maybe an hour or so?! Bill P
The majority of what you posted is checked annually in Virginia during the mandatory motor vehicle inspection program costing $20. The rest is accomplished for no charge at Discount Tire after you buy your first set of tires from them.

Servicing is maintenance sometimes referred to as preventive maintenance. We do this to minimize the need for repairs to the vehicle. So, we do the first to prevent needing to do the latter. So again, servicing is maintenance.

But, I’ve been a car guy my whole life and do the routine maintenance on my own vehicles. I have never paid for nor will I ever for some, you pick the number, thousand mile checkup.

So, you see us car guys laugh at all this because we already know having someone else’s eyes on our vehicles is laughable. Our eyes work just fine! ?

I totally agree with you. I have done my own maintenance on my cars for years and I am amazed what some pay for "lip service" and figuratively get raped through cost of ownership in trusting the "Service guy".

my dealer charged me $30 for the 10 k service, which included tire rotation, again, I consider that pretty much maint free in comparison to ICE vehicles. $30, it's not even worth getting my hands dirty to save that. And I did most of the servicing on the two dozen motorcycles I've had over the years.

I did inform this reflect negatively on the brand that dealerships are giving out conflicting information.
Pretty sure Ford would love nothing more than to kill most of their dealership network if they were legally allowed to

Here is the itemized service

So, this is what Livermore Ford charges for a 30,000 mile service on a 2022 Mache. Sounds about right….
