So the random low speed limit signs like detecting a 45 mph sign on the interstate that obviously doesn't exist is one thing...

But detecting 80mph signs in the middle of a city seems extremely dangerous....

That’s what I did.

Of course it’s only dangerous if you had cruise control on in the city, but still.

FWIW if you turn the setting off it’ll still display the speed limit on your dash but it won’t automatically adjust your speed.

My car did that. I kind of expected it tho................ I saw the 30mph sign, had cruise set at the time, the sign had a shadow across it that made the 3 appear to be an 8. I thought, surely it won't see that as 80. Well, it did  fortunately I anticipated this and touched the brake pedal before it accelerated to much

Feels like I paid money for that feature tho....

I just wish Ford would fix it along with slamming on the brakes on the interstate because it sees 45mph signs when there isnt even any signs at all.

I gave up on the built in maps a long time ago because of that exact issue. The map company they use is a joke and submitting fixes or speed adjustments is a complete waste of time. They still have my home address on the wrong side of the street, and SEVERAL incorrect speed limits in my area. I‘ve been using Apple Maps without any issues.

Last weekend I was showing my wife how accurate the MME sign detection is vs Apple Maps. Then this:

Seeing signs is part of it. Using a database is the other part of it. If one cares you can go to the HERE website and see what the database says. This isn't FORD, it is HERE.

Yeah, my personal view is the car should ask you to confirm when the speed limit increases by more than 20 mph. The system is very good at reading signs, but occasionally gets it wrong.

Likewise it should ignore 5-10 mph signs so it doesn’t slam on the brakes. I’ve had that happen too.

When I drive around the far suburbs of Chicago, the phrases "You are not a bus!" and "You are not a truck!" are common. Sees the 70 mph general limit sign, sees the 60/65 bus/truck limit 30 feet later and starts decelerating...

I wish they will too.

But until they do…….. turn it off! Seriously.

Like you said it’s a safety concern. If you know it doesn’t work properly and is dangerous, there is no reason to continue to use that feature.

I did use it for a year, but honestly didn’t like it when the car would see something I don’t and suddenly speed up or slow down. Luckily I never had a 80 mph in a 30 situation (actually I don’t think I ever had a time it was wrong), but I still didn’t like it.

Had my 2019 Honda Insight read a 70 mph sign as 100 mph once. I'm pretty sure it is using a combination of visual recognition and databases. What is unique to Ford compared to my Honda was the speed adjustment while on cruise control. The sign reading issues and database issues are not Ford specific from my direct experience.

I don't think these type of features are ever presented with a guarantee of 100% accuracy and I don't think that's a reasonable expectation either. It's great most of the time, which is a benefit, and when it's not you have to mitigate it. That could be by ignoring it, turning off the speed adjustment, etc.

I don't want companies to remove features that are generally beneficial just because of a few issues inherent in a system like this. As consumers I think we do bear a little responsibility on what we consume and how we choose to consume it.

But yeah, well, you know, that's just like my opinion, man.

If it saw 80 due to the shadow, why wouldn't it do 80. In Utah and Texas, the speed can go 80(85 in texas).

I wish Ford would pull speed limit info from Android Auto.?

It's rather arrogant for Ford to think they can create a viable competitor to Apple or Google maps. They should just leave nav out of their cars entirely and give us all a $4k refund or cheaper future pricing.

On my exit off a freeway to get home, the dash would report 80 in the 30 mpr exit ramp and street.

The reason was someone had placed a black sticker that filled the negative space on the left of the 3, making it look enough of an 80.

While one (should) already be breaking by that point, making cruse control stop if on, it was an early reminder that it's not a perfect system.
