Apple CarPlay maps and GPS do not use the Ford built in GPS. It uses the iPhone.
This is not true. The phone gets both, and chooses which one to use based on signal quality, and heuristics.

This is why one of the potential solution (that worked very well for some people incl me, but not all people) is to hide the phone inside the storage area under the armrest.

The built in Nav works correctly . I don‘t think this is hardware gps fault but rather a problem with the ford application interface with apple car play . I believe the car gps is passing garbage data to the iPhone when losing gps signal instead on using the existing compass direction and speed to calculate the new coordinates

It’s certainly possible, but I don’t find this convincing. The kind of software problem that you’re describing is unlikely to affect only you.

I assume that you have tried various phone placement? If none of them help (hide as much as you can, expose as much as you can), unfortunately I don’t think I have anything to recommend.

This is just not just me or even just ford vehicles . As I said this makes Apple Maps (or any car play navigation) unusable in the vehicle. This was one of the selling points for me in the mach-e so it’s super disappointing .

Is that a flux capacitor ? Are you from the future where all CarPlay problems are solved ?

It’s like most technology - it works great the first time and after that, t’s a crap shoot.

This. Completely.

This completely. I've confirmed pro 14's and 15's just suck in a lot of cars. But it's not all of them and thus a real pain in the ass to get resolved.

What I've noticed lately is whatever is feeding the GPS to Apple Maps while in the car is now losing sight of everything when I stop. So if I stop it goes to the big circle and takes 50ft of mvt before it figures out, usually which direction I'm going. Compass appears functional but it's overly sensitive now. I can move my compass by tilting the phone. So it's direction indicator is being affected due to the angle of the phone. If I hold it 'flat' like it would mostly be on the old wireless charger and add roll to it the compass moves ~5 degrees. I can see this being an issue. Same goes if I tilt. I didn't have that problem with he 12pro.

Lots of people have this issue, lots don't. For those that do, well we're all crazy or, 'holding it wrong again'.

I have had my Ford Nav go walkabout as well more than once, no clouds, solar flares or underpants gnomes futzing about with it, it just decided I didn't move for about 5 minutes in a drive. But when it did that it locked up fully, as if the car wasn't moving it didn't try to put me back on track or tell me to turn. Just left a big ole dotted line.

Usually I have my phone on a 45 degree angled billet aluminum mount with a magsafe puck. When it did freak out this weekend, I moved it to the parking brake button area and it at least found it's self again. The rest of that drive though it bounced around a couple feet in any direction and big circled me at every stop as usual. It didn't go to the 30~50ft big circle when sat signal goes fully kaput though, just the smaller 'I have no idea where you're pointed' circle. Which has actually been a big issue for me when walking with both of these 15pro max's over the last year.

I had the same issue on my 2020 Escape - even when not using an iPhone. Built-in nav would do the same thing. It usually required stopping the car, shutting it off, and then after restarting, it would be OK. So far, I have not encountered this on the Mach E.

Update - Tried both the drivers side screen mount and the centre console positions for my phone and the same problems exist . The dealer says this maybe solved in an october software update . Anybody know what this is ?

Sounds like they are hoping when Apple announces the latest version of iOS in September/October, it will fix the problem. I have my doubts that this is actually true.

Again, I have the same problem when my phone is in my back right pocket. As soon as I put the phone in the cupholders, or where the wireless charging mat location is, the phone immediately gets a lock on my location and Apple Maps navigation works just fine.

I have the same issue - renders Apple Maps unusable and has been going on for at least a year. Very frustrating. I have a 16 Pro that is fully updated - I'm also on the public beta program. I just drove down to Las Vegas from the Bay Area, and the problem arose about half the time. My wife unfortunately has to be ready to use her phone to navigate from the passenger seat. Hopefully Ford can figure this out but at this point not holding my breath.

Back when I had this issue, I found that moving the phone underneath the car’s armrest resolved the issue. It likely forced the app to use the car gps position rather than the phone’s. iPhone 15 ProMax. YMMV.

I really wish I hadn't stopped reading this forum a couple of years ago - I would have picked up tidbits like this that would have improved my in-car experience dramatically. Thank you - it's worked so far!

IOS 18 appears to be a bit better. At least on big island where it had to use the cars GPS (cabled to a crappy Altima) it stayed on track. Around town the couple day's I've bothered to look at Apple Maps it's been not a drunken sailor and only wondered for a couple seconds.
I'm kind of wondering if the 'I don't know where you are going' circle is a sure fire way to tell that it's using the phones GPS or not.
The problem I have with hiding the phone is it usually gets pissed about the PaaK when I try leaving it in my pocket until i back out of the garage.
