Am I crazy? Or has this been proven that pre-conditioning leads to a faster charge?
In my limited experience, I have seen little difference and have stopped thinking about pre-conditioning. OTOH, I am based in Louisiana where batteries are almost never cooler than optimal. I think the car does what it needs to do to protect the battery from damage, and I don't care about an extra few minutes charging. I may try again if I do a long road trip way up north.

Apple's not changing their privacy policy. It's up to the car manufacturers to work with Apple in order to create a preconditioning flag based on type of destination (DCFC) and time to arrival at the type of destination. Precise location and other pieces of information that affect the privacy policy do not need to be given to the car by the phone. 🤔🐩
True, but on the other hand, Apple is unwilling to share the phone’s position. The phone running and controlling CarPlay. The phone that is in the car. The car that Ford knows exactly where it is. 🤷

So, I guess the time to heat up the battery is relatively the same whether it’s the car or the charging station doing it - let’s say 10 minutes. Whereas the time to recover the energy used by the car to heat the battery is relatively quick at the charger, say 1-2 minutes. Makes sense. I’m fortunate to not have to worry about it down here …
It takes a lot longer than 10 minutes to precondition a battery. At least 30 minutes and my other two EVs start at 45 minutes and 60 minutes from the charger. And they also provide a manual button as a backup for chargers not in the nav.

How can you tell Android Auto does this? Wouldn't this just be a feature of the car, not the app you're using?
Because I have a cheap Android phone too for this very reason, and it works perfectly. It also works perfectly on our other EV, the Kia EV9, which Apple Maps has yet to even recognize as an EV in CarPlay, and the EV9 has a manual preconditioning option. The issue with the cheap Android phone is that I won’t get calls or messages forwarded to it while driving unless I get it a SIM card., which adds to the cost of every trip.

Would it make sense for us to start a Twitter campaign tweeting to Ford’s official account about adding a manual preconditioning option? This is something they ought to be able to implement through an OTA update for all model years. It’s a ridiculous omission. Thoughts?

But that’s 30 minutes using your car battery while you’re also using your car battery to drive your car. I gotta believe that a high power DCFC will heat the battery a little (or a lot) quicker.

Great point. Certainly a loss of functionality with our workaround. I would only use this setup for long trips.

EV routing with Apple Maps over CarPlay only works with Ford and Porsche Taycan.

EV routing with Google Maps over Android Auto only works with Ford.

A button on the display to turn it on would solve the problem easily.

thanks. I wasn’t aware of that. Pretty pathetic. I guess I won’t be holding my breath for the EV9 support any time soon. ABRP…

The lack of preconditioning for older VWs, leading someone to take drastic action:

https://insideevs.com/news/774611/vw-id3-id4-skoda-enyaq-battery-preconditioning-mod/

I've been in a few situations where it's cold, Ford or Google do not have a charger in their maps, and I've had to have extended charging times because of the lack of preconditioning.

It's either not possible, or they have concern about drivers not using it right. Or it just costs too much for them to develop, test, deploy, and support.

Relying on Apple to change their policies seems like the hard way to tackle this problem. The easy way is just a manual precondition feature in the menus. Perhaps in the built-in "charging" app.
Agreed.
