This doesn’t apply as strongly to EVs because EVs are generally really heavy for their size and don’t have all the weight up front - so your rear tires don’t break out as easily as say on an ICE Mustang with a front weight bias and relatively little weight over the rear wheels.
exactly. My mach E replaced a mustang coupe, which wasn't that bad in the rain. The ER RWD Mach E is very good

I was just taken by surprise coming from front wheel hatchback. If it is a straight line, you are fine, if there is a turn and road is wet, you better watch out, even slightest acceleration makes it unstable.

I disagree. Short range (~100mi) on our Nissan Leaf totally kills the value in the marketplace these days. I think the extra range will be important come resale time.

As for AWD, that really depends on where you live. If folks think AWD is important for year-round driving that will pay off as well.

Remember, much of this is a matter of buyer perception rather than reality.
I agree and think the ERs will keep better value for this reason. 200 miles+ seems to sort of be the acceptable floor these days based on the range of most new EVs hitting the market, but I wouldn’t be surprised if that is more like 250 miles in 3-4 years from now when lots of people start looking to trade in their 2021 Mach-Es.

RWD will get stuck on the beach. However, it does feel "right" when you give it the onions, one of the things I do not like about the wife's Explorer is the FWD pull on the steering.
I went on a beach camping trip once where I forgot to lock my Blazer’s front hubs. Drove around just fine with the tires deflated to 12psi all weekend. I was quite chagrined when I went to reinflate the tires and unlock the hubs on getting back to the asphalt. ?

My opinion on resale value mirrors the majority here. We just don’t know. The model isn’t even half a year old. There is no history to pull from. Just buy what you think you will be most happy with. That’s what I’m doing.

If your commute is les than 50 miles/day you will be fine with the S AWD. I drive about 30 and charge every other day. I max at 70% and get down to about 40%. I can easily do a 150 mile round trip drive to the far side of Denver when I need to which is about as far as I ever drive.

I am happy to have a steel roof, 18” wheels, and an extra $8k in my pocket.

Thanks for the really thoughtful advice, everyone. Gave me a lot to think about .. sorting it all out, I ended up going for the fully-loaded version - premium with ER AWD. Excited :)

I've been wondering about this since the other thread on this AWD / RWD thing. I know there is virtually no maintenance on the drivetrain for an EV... but is there more of a chance of things going wrong / needing some extra maintenance down the road with extra motors? maybe I'm over thinking it.

I spent 4 years driving Camaro SS's through central NY winters. I just put 4 snows on and never had an issue. The max depth I drove in was about 6".

With that said, I will be picking up my AWD EXT soon just because I do like the peace of mind with AWD.

Another opinion: More motors = less stress per motor most of the time, unless you enjoy drag racing from stoplights...

I'm placing an order for a Mach-E and deciding last minute whether or not the AWD and ER is worth it. I've decided AWD ER would be nice but I'm mostly curious to see if you recoup the additional cost when re-selling. I.e., how popular is the bigger battery and the ER. I live in the northeast so snowy driving conditions is another consideration. I'd probably say that the bigger battery seems more worth it to me than the AWD, but I'm worried that AWD might hold it's value a bit better. Thoughts?

I had a 2014 Ford Fusion Energy which provided about 30 miles on a good, hot summer day of electric miles before the engine kicked in. While I loved that car, if I used the air conditioner in the Summer, the miles reduced dramatically. If I used the heater/defroster during the winter, the miles went down dramatically. When it came time to ordering my Mach E, there was absolutely no question in my mind that I wanted all wheel drive plus the extended range battery. I do not really care if they pay off monetarily at trade-in time. I want peace of mind! Plus, with the exponential discoveries being made in electric cars, five years from now, my Mach E may not be worth "that much" anyway. I will not care then as I would have had a fabulous time with my car for five years!

I've ordered AWD standard battery. I'm not planning to use mach-e for any trip that will require a charging stop, at least not until charging stations are totally reliable and can be found on every freeway exit. With that, 200 or 300 mile range doesn't make much difference.

I ordered the ER AWD, I wanted the bump for acceleration, range, plus the AWD grip.

IMO, in terms of resale, the extended range battery will be more sought after since range is important for a lot of people, and it can’t hurt when/if battery degradation starts to occur

In considering ER and AWD vs SR and 2WD is the weight difference impacting the miles per KW ? - Normally a heavier vehicle will have lower MPG than a lighter one - but it may be that regeneration and weight difference may make this a minor factor. Does this cost difference make a difference?
