Back camera recall

Ford Motor (F.N), opens new tab is recalling nearly 1.1 million vehicles in the United States because rearview cameras may not display images due to a software issue, increasing the risk of a crash.​

The recall covers some 2021 through 2024 model year Bronco, F-150, Edge, and 2023-2024 Escape, Corsair, F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550 and F-600 vehicles, the automaker said Wednesday in a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.​

Apparently it's resolved with an APIM update, so _hopefully_ we'll see something coming OTA or via FDRS soonish

Yeah, but there's usually a huge disconnect between having updated firmware available and actually pushing it out to affected cars. Reading the reuters article is amusing. For example:

Dealers are expected to update vehicle software through an over-the-air update.

Umm... if the dealer is doing it, it isn't over the air...

Oh, and this is discouraging:

Letters notifying owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed by June 16. A second letter will be sent once the remedy is available later this year.

So, they don't have a fix yet, and might not for several months yet.

Glad this is another software fix. I'll be 2 for 2 on self-updated customer satisfaction/recalls after this one is available. My zero dealer trips ownership experience remains in-tact.

I wonder if this super odd glitch (which only happened once) is part of what the recall is supposed to fix. It's had to see, but the 360º camera only showed tiny portals of image and the forward view was just the circle you see in the lower half of the screen. (I was on concrete roadway at the time and the grey of the concrete was quite similar to the grey of the screen, which is why it's difficult to see.) Oh, and yes, I know the article is about the rear camera, but (I presume) its all one system...

It's an update to the APIM module which Ford is capable of sending over the air (OTA.)

I don’t remember ever noticing a failure with mine.

I haven’t experienced this yet on the Mach-E, but every older car I’ve ever driven for any length of time with a rear view camera, as it aged, the camera would get glitchy, particularly if you shifted from park to reverse very quickly after turning it on.

Glad the fix will be handled OTA once it is available.
