I went a different route for getting my personalized plate. I ordered the plate as soon as I ordered my Job 1 MME. Had it put on my previous car (2016 CMAX Energi) and then just transferred once the car came in!

They have a live chat option on their web site that you can use to contact them. That's how I checked on my HOV stickers.

Chat worked! They say they have my application but "verification and issue takes 6-9 months". Your tax dollars at work!

Yeah, that’s true but not necessarily the right answer. After 9+ months of waiting and getting the same “wait for verification line” + the “it’s 2021 and we are still recovering from COVID restrictions”, I finally found a DMV chat representative who understood my delay was beyond normal waits and got the number called the DMV Field Office Support Unit - the “A Team” that helps DMV branches with sticky requests.

In my case, DMV Field Unit determined that DMV had lost my online application for personalized plates (!) and the plates were never made. After sending a copy of my application and payment receipt email + credit card, I got my personalized custom plates (personalized Whale Tail) in six weeks.

I went to check on mine because it had seemed like forever, and the DMV website said that vanity plates were taking 7 to 9 months right now.

You know why it’s taking so long in California? They keep letting everyone out of prison, so not so many inmates to make the plates………. [just teasing][maybe not….]

Now on month 10 waiting for plates. What is funny is that they sent me my new registration which shows the personalized plate info but I do not have the physical plates. Funny and sad.

If you have AAA, go to them first. Might as well use what you're paying for and not sit on hold with the DMV for days.

Ya, you can try AAA but more than likely they won't do anything. I've been to them 3 times for what I thought were simple tasks. I was trying to turn in my personalized plate (RSMACHE) on one occasion and they said "Oh know we don't do that"! So, I ended up going to a DMV office waiting 90 minutes to turn it in. What a joke that was so they get you coming and going. The California DMV is a total joke and a waste of time! Goodluck with those plates my friend!

So some info...I asked for a call back and they called me back in 10 minutes. Said my plates have been sent to another company that makes them and they have 90 days. Should have them by 22 Feb. So that would be one year since ordering. We'll see!

I got mine yesterday via AAA in San Luis Obispo CA. I'd ordered them through AAA in mid April 2023.

It's odd that I'd stopped in a couple days ago to check and they'd said that DMV was making system changes and they couldn't see the status of the plates. Hmmmm......
