Anyone done this? I want to safely make a 100 foot 30am extension cord to run off a dryer plug. What would the process be for doing this and ensuring the right plugs are used?

100' of 6/3 with group NM-B cable will run you around $400. Might be just as cost effective to run a proper plug where you need it. Plus safety and convenience.
It’s impossible to install a plug in this location so was looking for the odd time I need more than L1. There are some RV extension cords in the 75’ range for about $50. (Used)

Few things here.

You do not want to be constantly plugging and unplugging things as that will wear out the outlet and can lead to shorts, arcing and fires.

Therefore you should be using a device like splitvolt or dryer buddy that will split the outlet to two and not let you use both at the same time.

That being said, it’s not recommended to use an extension cord, especially for 240V, and ESPECIALLY not for a 100ft run.

100ft of just 8/3 Romex wire needed to support 24A charging will be several hundred dollars. I don’t think anyone will have a readymade extension cord of that thickness for that much length.

Plus the cost of a split volt is a few hundred.

Plus you need a charger that can be limited to 24A. The mobile cord that came with the car charges at 32A so you CANNOT use it on a dryer circuit.

So all in, you are probably just about the same if not more cost than installing a proper separate circuit for a charger.

RV’s do NOT constantly pull max amps for hours and hours. Any cable for an RV is not rated for EV charging. Inspect the cable gauge and make sure it’s appropriate for 24-30A continuous. You might be out of luck on your situation, or you can take the gamble of burning your place down. Make sure you’re not using the mobile charger (32A). You need an EVSE that is adjustable to 24A.

100' extension cord is not okay. There will be too much voltage drop. If it's that far away and outside, then you need to have power trenched out to a pedestal.

Why did you buy an EV if you have to park it 100' away from power?
because this is not for my home. That’s why.

I've done this, but certainly not 100', and I was using a Model 3 where I could control how much amperage the car was drawing. And I basically continuously monitored it.

As others have said, no way at 100' at 30A, especially if you can't cut down the amperage either with the EVSE or the car. And even then, you have to plan for a worst case scenario such as the car trying to pull too much current.

If you don't really know what you are doing and don't have extensive knowledge of the codes, why they are what they are, split phase 240v power, etc., then just don't do it.

Nothing is impossible, it just comes down to how much time/money/resources you're willing to spend.

If I am correctly reading between the lines, this may be an Air BNB type scenario where the house is not yours and you want/need some level 2 charging capability? Like others have stated, a 100' RV extension cord if it exists is not the safest way to go and can introduce some liability to you if this is not your house.

I'll also throw out that if you are 100' away from the power distribution panel and using level 1 charging which is 12 amps, you may be already introducing some large voltage drop in that scenario and "stressing" the current wiring.

More details could help with receiving better suggestions.

Hey, it’s my rec property so the ability to park the car close enough to the panel just isn’t an option and the closest thing is the dryer plug. Terrain just doesn’t make it possible to move the car closer.

L1 charging doesn’t pull 12 amps though and it pulls more like 9.5 max. It’s incredibly conservative. I have been L1 charging in my home garage which is also probably 100ft from my panel as well and it’s fine.

The most important thing is that it's not safe. Dryer outlets are rated for 30A, which would be a maximum of 24A continuous load. You do NOT want to plug a 32A or higher EVSE into a 30A circuit. As others have said, a 100 foot extension cord is also unsafe for continuous loads. Add them together and you are demanding trouble. 🤔🐩
