Could use some advice, maybe I'm just missing something. Here are the details:
  • At work today the Universal chargers were taken but there were open Tesla L2 chargers.
    • Actually they are all Tesla chargers but some have the type of connector that will fit the MME and I've used these successfully a few times.
  • My battery is at 83% and I figured I would top off to 90%.
    • One thing I noticed when I opened my charger port door is that all the lights in the circle were lit up--I'm used to seeing at least one not lit. Not sure if that's relevant.
  • I put on the TeslaTap--it's a very tight fit, but I think I fully seated it (was really hard to remove it). The little lever that includes the hole for the lock had popped out a bit.
  • I waited at least 30s and plugged it in. When I did, the ring of lights went out. On subsequent attempts the ring stayed lit but charging didn't commence.
  • My FordPass app said a charger was plugged in but it wasn't charging and there was no button that says 'charge now to 100%" which I thought I'd seen with the other chargers that I've gotten to work previously.
  • There is what looks like a little button on the Tesla handle (the part that goes into the TeslaTap)--it's flush with the handle but it looks like a power switch. I pushed it in but nothing happened. I also tried depressing it for several seconds.
  • I tried the same approach on another Tesla charger but saw the same result--didn't work.
Thoughts?

Do you happen to have any photos of the tesla tap attached to the tesla charging cable? I wonder if it's a poor connection? The only thing I can think of is that it's not fully connected.

The charging circle shows 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. If you're at 83%, then the final circle would in fact be lit in some manner.

Tesla Tap has to be fully seated. Plugging IT in to the car is why it showed plugged in, but if the adapter wasn't fully seated on the Tesla handle that explains no charging.

Thanks both. How do you know if it's fully seated? Any tips for getting it to seat properly? The device mentions using some lubricant which I don't have handy but I guess I can pick some up if I know what to get.

They recommend Chemplex 862 Silicone Compound. Basically silicone grease. Silicone spray on the outer part would likely work fine also. Or silicone plumbing grease.

Which connection was made first? To the car or to the charging cable?

To confirm, you're plugging the Tesla connector into the Teslatap and then waiting 30 seconds - not plugging the teslatap into the car first - correct?

Would some Teflon spray work? I could spray some on a paper towel and wipe the inside part of the TeslaTap. I don’t have silicon grease around and the one you listed is pricey for a one time use.

Don't have mine in front of me, but since the Tesla tap seated on the car (it seems), the other end is what didn't seat, and that would be lubed on the outside I would think, no?

The Tesla cable end goes into the TeslaTap. So it’s the inside surface of the TeslaTap that needs some lubrication (or the outside of the Tesla charging cable end).

What’s that thing on the Tesla charger handle that looks like a button one would press?

First thought that comes to my mind is perhaps the charger you attempted to connect to needed more time to initialize after connecting the TeslaTap.

There have been times I've needed to wait over a minute after connecting the TeslaTap to my home Tesla charger. When that happens, I've needed to disconnect and reconnect the TeslaTap, wait a bit longer, and plug to the car again.

Another possibility is if these are Gen 3 Tesla Destination Connectors / Wall Connectors. They can be set up to work for only Tesla vehicles by a switch. The first and second generations don't have this capability. I am not sure if this new feature is on by default or not for new units from Tesla.

Good point. @RMoore , are the Tesla chargers white or silver?
