Help me out and correct me if I am wrong.
So I have a Mach e. Select 2022.
So when it comes to fast charging in my head I believe states that charge by the KWh are better for me than by the minute since my car's max is 110kwh charging which I have never seen. I typically get 60 and then it declines granted I have been chicken to go below 10%, and I think I need to get to 80% so I am not trying to see every charging location.

When I road-tripped on Ford's dime I didn't care but thinking about this summer I didn't know if I should try to avoid per minute as much as possible or if doesn't matter. Just curious if anyone thought about it.

If you are being charged by the minute, then you definitely want to stop charging by 80% when it really slows down. Precondition and arrive as low as possible for faster speeds, and only charge back what you need to reach the next charger with a buffer of 10-15%. In some cases you may only need to charge to 60%, etc.

Depends on what is being charged for each minute vs KW. compare the per minute price to delivers 1 KWH the per KWH price for each station and you'll know. each station may be charging different prices too.

I have not used the tesla chargers yet, but using the app and seeing the pricing I was surprised to see the per KW price was different between two stations 5 miles apart. I think the prices vary by location for all the chargers. Makes it tough to find the lowest cost.

Love the car and mostly enjoy the flight planning of trips and where to stop to charge.

The charging cost basis is regulated by the individual state. Some require the cost to be by the minute and others by the KW delivered. I find the cost by the KW to be cheaper due to the MachE charging rate.

Since charge rates vary so much from tower to tower, network to network, low to hight - I"d rather pay by kW delivered.

First, you should see steady 120s, then it drops to 80s at like 60%.

Most EAs that charge by the minute are dirt cheap. The Mach-E ER gers around 1.6 to 1.75 kW per minute. If they charge say 36 cents a minute, do the math. 36 / 1.6 = 22.5 cents per kWh.

A charge rate average of 60 kW is the rate where the costs can be directly compared.
That is: $0.36/kWh = $0.36/min.

As Lee said, there's a bit more calculation you'll want to do at a per minute charger since each kWh your car pulls has a different price.

If your car charges at 120 kW, then you can pay twice per minute (say, $0.72/min) than per kWh ($0.36/kWh) and pay the same total for the juice.

If your car charges at 30 kW, then you can only pay half per minute ($0.18/min) than per kWh ($0.36/kWh) and pay the same total for the juice.

Example: You need 60 kWh.

If you get 120 kW charge rate, that's 60 kWh/120 kW = 30 minutes time to charge
Cost to charge:
$0.36/kWh * 60 kWh = $21.60
$0.36/minute * 30 min = $10.80

But if you get 30 kW charge rate:
It takes 2 hours to charge.
$0.36/kWh * 60 kWh = $21.60
$0.36/min * 120 min = $43.20

I would suggest if you have only seen 60kW charge rates, try some different chargers. As others have indicated, we get ~ 120kW on a good charger.

Make sure you precondition en route to a charger (at least 20 min, especially if it’s cold). I have a 2021 Select and when I precondition, I would say 9 out of 10 times I instantly peak at 115 kW when below 30ish percent and then its pretty stable at 80-90 kW on EA chargers.

Not really what I was asking.
It's part of what you were asking. Avoid charging in the upper range at charge/min
stations, because the upper ranges 60%, 70% and 80% get slower so you charge/min will be costly.
I have read most of the data on charging stations on this forum.
The problem is, it's a moving target when it comes to costing out all the different charging companies. The cost is different for the same company in a different location.
So, no one can say with accuracy that EVgo has better rates than ChargeAmerica or Tesla for that matter.

I conclude from my reading that I will charge when I need it, at the closest station and not bounce around looking for the best price.
In the future we will see competition that will drive charging costs down or up to where they become stable and at that point we can say this company is better than those companies.
