I understand the low pitch whine when going at low speeds is a necessary safety measure, but is there ANY way to turn off the beeping/chiming as I back up? I get home from work at 6AM and back in to my garage. My garage is on the same side of my house as my kid‘s rooms. I really don’t need them being awoken by a beeping car backing up. I’ve backed up cars for decades without it beeping. I know work trucks have to beep. But does my private car now have to do this too?

EDIT/Conclusion: No there is no setting to turn it off.
There are unapproved ways to modify the speaker that emits the sound. The speaker is under the car and accessing it requires removing the fiber protective shield.
You can then remove the grill over the speaker and place some cardboard or foam over it to muffle the speaker.
Or you can disconnect the speaker, it is connected by two blade type connectors. However if you do this you will get a “pedestrian alert” fault on the instrument panel unless you place a resistor between the two connectors. Some have had luck with a 5Watt 4.7 ohm resistor. If you try this, I must point out that resistors produce heat and if you get a cheap resistor and burn your car down, I didn’t tell you it was a good idea, only that some people had done it.

It can be disabled, but not by a dealer. It’s a Federal Safety Regulation. Everyone knows what that sound means, which is why it’s there.
The beeping is not a federal requirement. A pedestrian warning noise is, and it already has that. The beeping is emitted in addition to the normal pedestrian warning noise. I don't know of any other EV that does this.

It’s in the CFR.

The pedestrian alert speaker is just under the front underbody shield which is easily disconnected. I don't know if the reverse beeping uses this same speaker but when I get my car I will certainly figure it out because I would rather it not beep either.

It appears whomever stated the backup beep being in the CFR may have tried, unsuccessfully to find a source. Then removed his comment. I find that appropriate and would like to thank that kind stranger for not doubling down.

Agreed. Though an edit instead of a deletion would have kept the replies in context. Oh well, moving on.......

How easy is it to get through the underbody shield? I'm not advocating that anyone disconnect the pedestrian warning sound, but I'm will to experiment to see if the beep can be eliminated (if my car ever arrives).

ok but now we're back to pedestrian alert vs. backup chime. These instructions appear to be the pedestrian alert that everyone agrees is legally required?

Did some posts disappear from this thread? Now it looks like we're having a conversation with ourselves
??? nothing seems to be missing for me. If you ignore people, their posts and quotes will "disappear" from the thread, maybe that's what happened for some of you?
