I find it super obnoxious in most circumstances. We live in a court surrounded by high trees and every one of our neighbors knows when my wife leaves early in the morning. This is one thing that Tesla got right IMO, our neighbor's Telsa just makes a spaceship sound backing out.

That’s because these cars have sound deadening everywhere. Sounds from the inside are not the same as sounds from the outside.

The starter motor on an ICE car is pretty loud so that would wake people up in a confined outside space? Plus of course the clattery racket from a large diesel or a big burbling V8 with extreme fartsound exhaust. People have got used to these sounds over decades and I'm sure people will get used to the sound of a few beeps when reversing. Over time when all ICE cars have been scrapped and urban areas become more quiet the need for reversing beeps might not be required. (Or the volume turned down). ?

Is there any way to increase the backup sound volume, or replace the sound with something more annoying? Say steel chains dragging on concrete? Just asking for a friend ?

Not particularly. It's at a frequency that some people find annoying. I think it's designed that way to get attention. I live in a very rural and quite temperate area of Hawaii. The noise isn't all that loud IMO.

My neighbor across the street and I both have MMEs. Neither one of us has ever heard the other backing out of our respective driveways from inside our houses. What kind of palm frond huts are y'all living in that this is waking people from a dead sleep??

The beep is definitely worse than a starter....the whole point is to get people's attention. If people ignore them, they shouldn't be on vehicles!

Everyone has things that annoy them. The fake sounds annoy me greatly.

Since people have been buying cars, many people have wanted the car to be as quiet as possible. Many ICE vehicles are super quiet - definitely softer than a MME with fake noises. Finally there are cars that can achieve that goal ICE cars have struggled to achieve, and what does our government do? Mandate they make noise. I hate it. I want my car to be quiet.

Of course I decided to keep the ability to turn the sound up if I feel I am driving in a situation where there could be stupid people walking while phone watching. Not sure if those people would hear anything, though.

I didn't really notice how loud it was until yesterday when I had my window down for a moment while it was in reverse. It needs to be dialed down a little.
